BOROUGH AFFAIRS
CARTERTON COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT. APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held last night and was presided over by the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner. There were also present: Councillors W. A. Hart, E. McKenzie, H. Mortensen, L. M. Clark, C. E. Stevens, C. J. DeLacey, W. R. Harry, H. E. Jackson and O. W. Wolters. The Mayor welcomed two new members to the council table, and Councillors H. E. Jackson and W. R. Harry returned their thanks, Mr W. Howard Booth, the council's representative on the Wairarapa Electric Power Board during the past 21 years, waited upon the council and t gave a very interesting report of his . stewardship. He thanked councillors • for the trust reposed in him. The Mayor thanked Mr Booth for his report and hoped he would continue to . faithfully serve the Carterton Borough. The treasurer reported a debit bali ance in the District Fund of £240 18s > 3d. but there was a deposit in the Post . Office Savings Bank amounting to ■ £2956 5s sd. The gasworks account ■ was in credit to the amount of £449 15s Bd. Accounts amounting to £742 9s 6d were passed for payment. • The Lake County Council wrote asking support for a resolution asking the Government to bring about the immediate cessation of the 40-hour week. The letter was received. _ Licenses were granted to the Regent Theatre, King’s Theatre and Band Room for the ensuing year. The Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote advising that the council’s share of estimates for 1941-42 would be £6ll, which was a reduction on the last term. The Carterton Hockey Club was granted the use of Carterton Park for hockey games. The secretary-manager of the Wairarapa Electric Power Board wrote in regard to the power shortage, notifying it would be necessary to switch off current in all street lights at 12.30 a.m., in lieu of 3 a.m. as at present, and that this curtailment would be brought into force at the end of the present week. It was resolved to fall into line with the proposal. At a meeting of the Works Committee it was decided that the western end of the Costly Street footpath be metalled and placed in a permanent condition. Mr Price was given permission to erect a fence on Phillip Street, and on the southern end of Gertrude Street, subject to a gate being erected at either end to the satisfaction of the council, and removed on request. The old sawmill site on Lincoln Road is to be inspected with a view to the : removal of sawdust nuisance. It was ' resolved that the matter be left to the i Clerk and borough solicitor to deal ' with. It was resolved that the lease of the ‘ sceptic tank reserve be advertised. < Applications are to be called for the j position of stoker at the gasworks. j It was decided that a special meeting r of councillors be held on Thursday, , June 12, for the purpose of considering j the estimates. j The Clerk was authorised to order a , supply of bitumen for use next year. - The following committees were appointed:—Finance: The Mayor, Councillors E.
