NO GREAT CHANGE
SITUATION IN CRETE GERMAN DRIVE NOT YET EXHAUSTED. SOME TANKS SAID TO HAVE BEEN LANDED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, Noon.) LONDON. May 2G. German planes are reported to have landed some tanks in Crete but so far there is no definite evidence of enemy tanks having made contact with our troops. It is pointed out that there was a little lessening in the intensity of the German attack- on May 25, but that this does not imply that the German drive is exhausted. The situation generally is unaltered. The Germans are still holding Malemi Aerodrome and may have landed further troops in the Canea and Retimo areas. The Bremen radio indirectly admitted German anxiety about Crete when an announcer said: ‘ Tensely, although hopefully, we await further information from the High Command. We know they will always bo truthful but must delay in order to establish facts.” The Greek Legation in London stated that the Ministers of the Interior, Labour, War and Air have remained in Crete to direct Greek civilian and military affairs. A Cairo message says King George of the Hellenes has personally written to the New Zealand Prime Minister (Mr Fraser.) expressing thanks and deep appreciation of the services of the New Zealand forces and also of the arrangements made for the safety of the King’s party. Mr Fraser returned to Cairo today after a two-clay visit to New Zealand wounded troops in Egypt.
