FEATHERSTON

RED CROSS SOCIETY SUCCESSFUL CARD PARTY. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was an excellent attendance at the weekly euchre party held in the Red Cross rooms yesterday, when the prize was carried off by Mrs G. Hankers. During the afternoon the following competitions were drawn: — Apron (worked and donated by Mrs J. E. Willett) won by Mrs L. G. Rasmussen; coathanger (donated by Mrs W. Feast) won by Mrs S. Kinsey; apples (donated by Mrs W. Charles) won by Miss Card. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames H. R. Bloxam, W. Feast and Miss Card. Bring and Buy Sale. A very successful bring and buy sale was held in the Presbyterian Hall to augment the Presbyterian Church Mission schemes. The produce stall was in charge of Mrs T. E. Tidswell, and Miss D. Chisholm, while Mesdames G. Yule and H. C. Hunter were in charge of the cakes stall.

The afternoon tea hostesses.were Mrs ! J. Anderson and Miss Towart. As a result of this effort the mission ■ funds will be greatly benefited. Social Gathering. ; A social gathering is to be tendered 1 A.C.2 A. L. Hodder, in the officer’s . room at the Anzac Hall on Wednesday night, when dancing will form the ma- ■ jor part of the programme. [ Red Cross Society's Conceit. The public of Featherston are assured of a good night’s entertainment on Thursday night next, when the pupils i of Miss Billie Stevens, Petone, will [ present the 1941 Dance Review, in aid of the local Red Cross Funds. Good response has been received by the schoolboys who are selling tickets, so ; that the concert promises to be a suc- • cess financially. Those wishing to reserve a seat may do so at Beckett's store, where a small sum is charged for the same. V.A.D’s. will be in attendance as ushers and will also hold the flag for the stray pennies, when it is hoped that the response will be very liberal. Arrangements are well in hand, and residents are asked to help the funds of'this very deserving cause. Home Guard. Those in command were very pleased to see a better attendance at the last weekly parade, when the hope was expressed that this would be main- . tained. The attendance has not been all that could be desired, and members are urged to attend more regularly. The Home Guard is one of the arms of the country's defence, and upon its numbers and efficiency may depend the security of the country. Not many, it is felt, are so shortsighted as not to realise the benefits derived from such useful training. Therefore, let it be the earnest endavour of very member to attend all the parades, and adopt as their slogan “Unity is Strength.” • Shooting Season. The season closed on Sunday in fine, but rather blustery weather. Campers have now deserted the lake shores, the bags being somewhat lighter than was anticipated. The season has been rather disappointing on the whole, especially for some sportsmen who have experienced trouble with their ammunition. From reports it is learned that some struck a bad patch, the powder having lost its “kick.” Apparently there has been a line of old stock on the market which some unfortunates have purchased. The birds are hard enough to shoot without the ammunition being inferior. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs A. S. Kilsby and their daughter Judith, are visiting Wellington. Mrs O. Price and family, Seatoun, have been the guests of Mrs George Boyce, Fitzhcrbert Street, Mrs Price will be better known as Miss Gwen Wickens, who spent her school days in Featherston. Mrs M. Mcllroy, of Timaru, is staying with her daughter, Mrs R. S. Keenan. Mr and Mrs H. R. Bloxam. have received cable advice that their only son, Flight Lieutenant John Bloxam, is now permanently stationed at Malta. A.C.2 A. L. Hodder (wireless operator) of Wigram, is home on leave. In the absence of the Rev. R. S. Keenan, who is acting chaplain at the Territorial Camp, Dannevirke, the service at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday was conducted by the Rev. W. Bloomfield, Greytown. Women's Division. There was a good attendance al the monthly meeting of the Pihautea-Ka-hutara Women’s Division of the Farm- ■ ers’ Union, which was presided over by the president, Mrs E. Ross. Oneapology for absence was received. A report on a dance held on Easter Saturday was presented and discussed I and was considered highly satisfactory. One new member was elected and one transfer received from the Martinborough branch. The tea hostesses were Mesdames E. Ross and R. Ness. Women's War Service Auxiliary. Mrs 1). H. S. Riddiford, a member of the committee, addressed a very largely attended and enthusiastic meeting at the Kahutara Hall recent- ( ly. Mrs Campbell Pearce introduced Mrs Riddiford who explained the aims ( and objects in detail. Nearly all present signified their intention of join- , ing, which was considered very satisfactory. Mrs Riddiford was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for her address.
