CARTERTON

GOLF CLUB STABLEFORD COMPETITION. ("Times-Age” Special.) The best cards returned in a four ball stableford competition played on the Carterton golf links were: C. Clarke and C. C. Callender, 25-24-69; B. Booth and M. Knowles, 43-20-69 Hill and Hughes Buttons: The holders, Messrs Whitburn and Gustofsen, were; successful in a match against Mesr/rs Hughes and Forbes by 2 and 1. DRUIDS’ LODGE QUARTERLY MEETING. The quarterly meeting of Totara Lodge No. 3 was held last nighty Arch Druid Bro. C. W. Smith presiding. Bro. Thos. S. Josephs notified that he was in the Sixth Reinforcements for active service and furnished all the particulars necessary when a lodge member enlists.

Sick pay and accounts amounting to £54 14s Bd. including £l2 Is Social Security sick benefit, were passed for payment.

The election of officers resulted as follows: Arch Druid, Bro. Basil Neilsen; Vice Arch Druid, Ero. H. Murrell; Secretary, Bro. E. McKenzie; Treasurer, Bro. R. Smith; Inner Guard, Bro. G. Bain; Outer Guardian, Ero. W. Fryer; M.C., Bro. H. Matson; Arch Bards. Bros. C. Geange and W. O. Geange; Vice Arch Bards, Bros. H. Bassett and M. E. Hannah; Musicial, Bro. C. C. Kitchen.

It was resolved that the next meeting night, June 2, be a “social night” for the officers installation to which all lodges in No. 1 District are to be invited. .

A, vote of thanks was passed to P.A. Bro. W. Fryer for services rendered while passing through the chairs and it was resolved that he be presented with a P.A. Collar and Diploma.

The arrangements in connection with the annual ball to be held in the King’s Theatre, Carterton, on Monday next were finalised. As the proceeds are to assist lodge members on active service the patronage of the public is asked for. WOMEN’S DIVISION BIRTHDAY PARTY. At the ninth birthday party of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union there was a good attendance of members and visitors and a very enjoyable time was spent. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames A. Clark, K. Grove and M. C. Mellish. ' During the afternoon a short programme was presented by members of the Social Club. The items rendered were as follows: A humorous recitation by Mrs H. Peters; songs by Mrs Card, and a short play entitled “The Dumb Wife of Cheapside,” those taking part in the latter being Mesdames Harrington, Stretton, Ordish, McLean, Peters, Corbett, Linton and O’Keefe.

A word competition, conducted by Mrs K. Reid, proved very entertaining and was won by Mrs Beu, of Greytown. Presentations were made by the president, Mrs Ordish, to Miss Thompson and Mrs Stretton in recognition of their past services as secretary and treasurer, respectively. Mrs Card was presented with the prize for the most points obtained during the year in handcraft. Mrs P. Hodder, president of the Garden Circle, then presented the Garden Circle points prizes which were won as follow: Flowers, Mrs Couper 1. Mrs Allen 2: shrubs, Mrs Couper 1, Mrs Allen 2. Mrs Ordish asked the oldest member, Mrs Snell, to light the candles on the birthday cake. The newest member, Mrs Binns, blew them out, and the first president, Mrs K. Reid, cut the cake. Greetings and best wishes for the future were expressed by representatives of the Greytown and Featherston branches of the Women’s Division, the Carterton, Parkvale and Dalefield institutes, the League of Mothers, the W.C.T.U., and the Farmers’ Union. During the afternoon a bring and buy stall was held under the capable control of Mrs L. Rayner to raise funds, for the Division's rest home at Palmerston North, the sum of £3 14s, being raised. Afternoon tea was later served. Gun Club. The Wairarapa Gun Club will hold a club competition, a novice trophy, and A and B grade sweepstakes at the club’s grounds at the weekend. Personal Items. Mr C. A. Knutson, an old player of the Dalefield Hockey Club, who was recently married, will be tendered a ‘■parcel evening” at the Dalefield Hall on Wednesday, June 4. Mr Gordon Lowe, of Carterton, will leave on Thursday to join his brother, Mr V. Lowe, in a fruit and green grocery business in Morrinsville. The friends of Mr C. Nicholson, of Tyne Street, will regret to learn that he is still confined to his bed. Mr E. R. Wilkins, of Carterton, is an inmate of the Croydon Hospital. Mrs Ward, at one time headmistress of the Waihakeke School, and now of Blenheim, is a visitor to Carterton. She is the guest of Mrs Nimot. Miss Valerie Jackson, of Rhodes Street, is visiting Wellington and is the guest of Miss Prenderville. Acting under medical advice Mr A. E. Hack, of Rhodes Street, has found it necessary to undergo treatment at Rotorua. Cyclist Injured. Mr 11. Morris, of Rhodes Street, Carterton, was cycling to Greytown last evening when he was knocked down by a motor lorry opposite Phillip Street, receiving injuries to his face, head, hahds and leg. Mr Morris was attended by Dr. W. J. C. Wells at the Croyden Hospital and later in' the evening was taken to his home in Rhodes Street. He is not seriously hurt.
