PIRINOA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE BIRTHDAY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a large attendance at the birthday meeting of the local Women’s Institute. Included among the visitors was a large party from the Matarawa-Dalefield branch. Mrs Spicer presided and extended a hearty welcome to the visitors. Mesdames Rolfe and Bain sang much appreciated vocal solos. Mrs Gallon rendered an amusing play entitled “The Fortune Teller,” which was received with much enjoyment. A Nigger Minstrel show provided by the members of the Circle was much appreciated, the rendering of the old plantation melodies being a feature. A sketch “’Arriet’s ’anclbag,” was another item which elicited much laughter and applause. A very bright Dutch scene interspersed with Dutch dancing was given in fine style by one of the members. Mrs Bain rendered pleasingly two patriotic airs. The final item was the Circle’s grand march song, “Swinging on the road to Victory,” which was sung with much enthusiasm. All the items were given by members of the Matarawa-Dalefield Institute and the local president (Mrs Spicer) in extending'-thanks to the visitors, stated how delighted all the members were at the treat they had had that afternoon.

The competition for the best bloom was won by Mrs Lovegrove'with Mrs Gaudin second, and Mrs O’Brien third. The prize for the best article made out of 1). yards of flannel was won by Mrs D. Mclntosh. Mesdames S. Mclntosh and Macdonald tied for second place. A competition for junior members was won by Miss N. Mclntosh with Miss Priest second. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Marshall, Gray, Leach and Weatherstone. Golf.

A bogey competition was played on Saturday by members of the local golf club. In the men's section M. Herangi and S. Thomas divide the prize. Next Saturday play will commence for club competitions. Shooting Season. The shooting season for swans and clucks closed on Sunday, and several shooters obtained limit bags. A Gate Destroyed., The gate which was removed recently from near the main road and erected about ten chains along the Kumenga Road, was on Thursday night completely demolished by some unknown motorist. Evidently the motorist responsible was a stranger to the locality. Attempts were made io discover the culprit but so far have been unsuccessful. Persona! Items. Mr F. I-liggleton has entered the Greytown Hospital for treatment. Mr and Mrs Cochrane have been visiting friends in this district.
