GIFTS TO SOLDIERS AN ENJOYABLE GATHERING. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Greytown Citizens’ Patriotic Committee entertained four members of the New Zealand military forces at a social gathering and dance in the Odd Fellows’ Hall last evening. They wore Messrs W. E. Workman. G. L. Mead and R. G. Haigh. The Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton) said that their guests were worthy descendants of early Wairarapa settlers. The citizens of Greytown were confident that they would uphold the good name of the New Zealand forces. On behalf of the committee Mr Horton presented each soldier with a fountain pen and diary. Tn the absence through indisposition of Mr J. W. Herod, chairman of the Greytown Returned Soldiers' Association. Mr H. G. Carter conveyed the best wishes of the returned soldiers to Messrs Workman, Mead and Haigh. Mr J. F. Thompson said that their guests were members of the Greytown Football Club, and on behalf of the club he wished them a safe return. The music for the dancing was supplied by Te Tail’s Orchestra. Extras were played by Messrs T. Drysdale, L. Lyster and A. G. Carter.
Basketball. The following is the Old Girls' basketball team to play Star 11. at the College grounds on Saturday. Players will travel! by the 1.20 p.m. bus:—L. Gray. N. Keltie, J. Gray, N. Garrity, P. Allen, A. Connelly, G. Gray, M. Gates, P. Eastwood. Hockey. Kia Kaha team to play Excelsior at Greytown on Saturday at 2.30 p.m.:— K. Maloney. L. Crawley. D. McCarty, C. Farrell. M. McKenna, P. Sugrue, B. Woodley, I. Svenson, E. Bouzaid, M. Keltie, B. Anker, R. Peterson. Golf Club Competition. A draw for partners in a stableford competition will be made at the club house on Saturday. Home Guard. The Greytown units of the Home Guard paraded on Wednesday evening. Work in field craft and signalling was carried out. The members of the Greytown Rifle Club, who are all in the Home Guard; carried out the inspection of the impressed rifles and sufficient rifles have been passed to enable the unit to complete its musketry course. The local Miniature Rifle Club offered all its club facilities to the Home Guard, and as there are good prospects of securing ammunition it was decided to accept the offer, the members agreeing to buy their own ammunition.
