CARTERTON

ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS WAIRARAPA PAST GRANDS’ LODGE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The quarterly meeting of the Loyal Wairarapa Past Grands' Lodge was held at Featherston last night, and was presided over by P.G. Bro. G. S. Bruce. The secretary was instructed to compile an article concerning the early history of the lodge for publication with the centennial records which are being issued by the Society. It was resolved that the nornination >of officers owing to the poor attendi mice be loft to the annual meeting ' which will be held at Carterton on July 24. The visitors were entertained to supper before returning home. SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED GATHERING LAST NIGHT. There was a large attendance at the King's Theatre, Carterton, last evening to entertain members of the N.Z. military forces who are on leave. The time was spent in dancing to splendid music provided free by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s orchestra. Extras were played by Miss V. Irwin and Mrs Ashton. Mr Ashton carried out the duties of M.C. Appropriate speeches were delivered by the Mayor (MT D. Taverner), Mr B. Roberts, M.P., Mr A. T. Murray and Mr H. J. McKenzie. The Mayoress presented each soldier with a gift from the residents of Carterton and district. Mrs Harold Hodder asked each soldier to accept from members of the W.D.F.U. a parcel of woollen comforts. Mr H. J. McKenzie, on behalf of the residents of Clareville, wished Private Archer the best of luck, and handed him a gift from the Clareville settlers. Staff Sergeant W. Shirley returned thanks. Supper was provided and dancing continued till after midnight.

LEAGUE OF MOTHERS , MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the League of Mothers was held in St Andrew’s Hall yesterday when Mrs R. H. Every presided over a large attendance. It was stated that Mrs L. Hunt was . sending cakes, etc., in connection with the hospitality extended to merchant seamen by the Missions to Seamen. Members decided to help in this direction. The following contributed io the afternoon's programme: Dorothy Martin, pianoforte solo: Betty Card, recitation: Billy Denbee, song: Beverley Goodin and Beatrice Newbould, pianoforte duet; Jack Nightingale, recitation; Mrs Bruce's class, drill display; Norma Tinsley, recitation; Nola Sewell and Beryl Busby, character song. Autumn flowers were presented to Miss Berrill and Mrs Bruce, who had assisted with the programme. The president expressed members’ regret at the impending departure of Mrs N. Boyne, and voiced the League's appreciation of her work as a member Qf the choir and on the patriotic committee.

A vote of sympathy with Mrs W. McPherson in the death of her son was passed. Mesdames R. 11. Every and F. L. Barr were appointed to represent the League at the birthday party of the W.D.F.U. At the birthday party of the Women’s Institute, Mesdames R. H. Every, F. L. Barr, Knox Smith and E. Williams will represent the League. Mrs H. Gpodin gave the hint: ‘'One dessertspoonful tartaric acid mixed with half a cup of water will remove ink stains from any material.” Mrs Tankersley provided the thought for the meeting. It was decided to hold a church parade at St Mark’s Church on Sunday, July 20. The secretary was requested to send a letter of appreciation for services rendered to Mrs E. T. Beaven.
