PIRINOA
GOLF SEASON OFFICIALLY OPENED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The weather was very boisterous for the official opening of the golf season on Saturday. A flag competition was played, the ladies’ match being won by Mrs Thomas, while the men’s competition remained unfinished owing to the weather conditions. Next Saturday a bogey competition will be played.
HORSE SPORTS CLUB TO BE WOUND UP. A meeting of members of the Pirinoa Horse Sports Club was held in the Memorial Hall to consider a proposal for the winding up of the club. Mr J. H. Tilson, who presided, stated that the club had ceased to function since 1928, when the last sports meeting was held. Prospects for the revival of the sport in the district seem remote. He stated that the club had a sum of money in the Post Office Savings Bank, and in the event of the club being wound up this money should be given to some institution agreed upon by the members. After a short discussion it was unanimously decided to wind up the club. : It was resolved unanimously that the money in the Post Office Savings Bank be donated to the trustees of the Pirinoa Hall Committee (Messrs Warren and Gillies) with the stipulation that it be used solely for the purpose of defraying the cost of repairs and maintenance of the building. The offer of Mr J. O'Brien, on behalf of the McDougall Estate, for the purchase of the club's shed was accepted. Messrs J. Gordon and T. Jennings were appointed co-trustees with Mr J. Tilson, who is the only surviving trustee since the formation of the club, to operate on the Post Office account. Messrs W. Hanlon and R. McDougall', the other trustees, are dead. Euchre Party and Dance. The local Patriotic Committee held a euchre party and dance on Saturday evening. There was a large attendance, and the music for the dance was supplied by a local band. The prizes were won by Mrs Atkinson (dinner), Miss Taylor and Mr H. Carter (Monte Carlo), and Mr Ray Thomas and Mrs Burling (Eketahuna) the chocolates. Miss Florence Tilson and Mr W. Adams divided the prize in the weight judging. Mr S. Mclntosh officiated as M.C. Personal Items. Mrs T. To Maari, who has been in Hawke’s Bay. has returned home. Mr E. Taurau has returned home after attending a parish conference at Hastings. Mrs Burling and the Misses Taylor. Eketahuna, are the guests of Mr and Mrs A. Burling. Mr D. S. Warren has returned from a holiday spent in the Taupo district. Mr and Mrs H. Lovegrove were the guests of Mr and Mrs F. Lovegrove over the weekend. Private Noel Duggan, writing from Greece in March to his father, stated that he was in the best of health and enjoying himself. Those parts of Greece he had seen were very beautiful. He was fortunate in meeting two Greeks who spoke English fairly well, and along with others was shown some of the historic places in the district they were camped in.
