ROAD CLOSED ‘ OWING TO REPAIRS TO BRIDGE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The road from Alfredton to Tiraumea will be closed for some days owing to repairs which are being carried out to the Waitawhaiti Bridge. BOROUGH AFFAIRS MEETING OF COUNCIL LAST NIGHT. The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Borough Council was held last night, there being present the MayorMr W. Olsen, Councillors M. W. Priest, D. D. Ryan, E. M. Simmers, K. D. Marenzi. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. P. S. Page. The treasurer (Mr B. Dinnan) re-' ported as follows: District fund account, dr., £54 Is 9d; Domain account, cr., £1 19s Id; rate arrears, £6OO 2s lid; cemetery arrears, £8 10s; library arrears, £1 5s Od. Accounts amounting to £lB6 Ils 8d
were passed for payment. The foreman reported, inter alia, as follows: During the month sumps were again cleaned out at the headworks, and tarring of the pipe bridge completed. A visit will be made to the headworks again, as soon as the river goes down sufficiently. No blocks occurred in the sewerage system, and all mains appear to be functioning correctly. Newman Road footpaths were grubbed and a section done in Vile Street. A check of all vacant plots in the cemetery, from the' cards in the office, has been undertaken, and these have been further checked with the plan and the cemetery. By a small adjustment of the plan in the Wes-leyan-Presbyterian section, quite a number of plots are available. Ample plots are available in both the Roman Catholic and Anglican sections. Inspections were made of the reserves during the month. Cliff Walk requires attention. Patching has been done in Hasfell. Street and Carter’s Road, and corners picked and raked in on Vile and Bright streets.
A letter from the Dominion Fire Controller regarding the supply of fire hose was referred to the Fire Brigade. The Fire Brigade wrote requesting the following equipment: 200 feet of hose, 13 working uniforms, 15 hatchets, keepers and belts and five pairs of boots. It was decided to hold the matter over until the estimates were being discussed.
It was resolved that the Mayor’s honorarium remain at £4O. The statutory meeting of the Eketahuna Domain Board was their held. The Mayor was elected chairman of the Board and Cr. D. D. Ryan treasurer.
As this was the last meeting of the. council prior to the election the Mayor took the opportunity of thanking the members of ,the council for their cooperation. He said that he thought the members had carried out their duties faithfully and well. He also extended his thanks to the clerk, Mr Dinnan, who, apart from his official duties, had carried out several war time tasks very capably. To the outside staff he expressed appreciation for their loyal co-operation. Cr. Simmers, in acknowledging the Mayor's remarks, thanked him for the kind references made to the councillors. He congratulated Mr Olsen on his re-election as Mayor, and the ratepayers on their choice. During the past term the councillors had been a happy family. Cr. Ryan said that the life of the present council had been marked by a spirit of friendly co-operation and he wished them success at the poll on Saturday. Cr. Priest conveyed his congratulations to the Mayor and Mayoress, who during their short term of office had rendered excellent services to the borough as well as carrying out war work. He regretted that the sewerage and reserves programes had not been completed during the present term of the council. He realised now that such things could not be brought about hurriedly. Cr. Marenzi congratulated the Mayor on his re-election. Mr Olsen's first term of office had proved a most] interesting one, and his association with the council had been very happy. The town clerk and foreman also returned thanks. For Motor Traffic Only. Phillips Bridge on the Castle Hill Road is now only available for use by motor cars. No stock will be allowed to cross it. It will be some time before general traffic will be able to use the bridge.
