TE ORE ORE

NEW MEETING HOUSE WORK OF REBUILDING. ("Times-Age” Special.) An indication of the hard work put in by the Te Orc Ore Meeting House Committee in rebuilding the district’s communal centre “Nga tau E Warn,” is contained in the annual report. The committee wished to thank the patron, Mr L. Pike, for his generous donations. His advice and help, financially and otherwise were always readily given. Reference is also made to the good work of Messrs W. and A. Himona.

The work of rebuilding the new meeting house began early in May, 1940. When the committee commenced its efforts to raise funds it began with a credit balance of £284. A sum of £4O was raised by a Paddy’s Market, and £44 by a competition. Altogether, £G3O was’paid towards the cost of the building, the piano was replaced, and crockery and furniture bought. Thanks were due to Mr A. Mikaera for building a bench, etc., and to Mr T Te Huki for h:'a efforts, which enabled the committee to purchase an electric urn, crockery, etc. By the committee’s efforts a fence had been erected around the meeting house and a pump had been installed. The carving was carried out by Mr N. Haeata. Financial assistance was given by the Native Department. The committee thanked Mr Haeata and those who erected fences, etc., and did other necessary work in connection with the meeting house. The committee was fortunate in receiving a Government subsidy of £1 for every £3 raised. The meeting house was opened by Sir Apirana Ngata and Mr F. Langstpne. The gathering proved most successful and with the co-operation of Maori and pakeha over 400 people were catered for. The report was signed by the secretary, Mrs R. Te Tau.
