COUNTY AFFAIRS
MEETING OF MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL CONSTRUCTION OF BROOKE’S BRIDGE. FLOOD DAMAGE TOTALS £lOOO. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday afternoon, the chairman. Mr E. W. Cheetham, presiding, there being also present Councillors A. Forsberg, D. Bennett, A. Gray, J. H. MacDonald and O. Welch. The treasurer's report which showed a credit balance ot £632 18s 5d was adopted. Accounts for £1264 Is 7d were passed. The chairman was authorised to make application for Man Highways and Public Works grants for subsidies for the current year prior to the date of next meeting. The clerk was instructed to give the usual public notice regarding the general rates for the current year. On the recommendation of the county engineers, it was decided to recommend to the Public Works Department, that Mr A. Cox be appointed clerk of works for the construction of Brooke’s Bridge at Mauriceville. Mr Cheetham advised that the Public Works Department had approved of the tender of Messrs Rhodes and McPherson for the construction of Broke’s Bridge at Mauriceville, and his action in accepting the tender was approved. A letter was received from the Public Works Department advising that Cabinet had approved a subsidy of £2OOO (£1 for £1) towards the cost of Brooke's Bridge. The chairman intimated that he had instructed the clerk to publish a further notice permitting heavy traffic to detour through Jackson’s Road during the construction of Broke's Bridge and his action in this direction was confirmed
It was resolved that the annual meeting of the council be held at the County Office, Mauriceville, on Monday, June 9, at 11 a.m. The clerk was instructed to take certain action regarding arrears of rates. The chairman reported that he, together with the district engineer of the Public Works Department, had inspected the recent flood damage to roads in the County and it was intimated that repairs would cost approximately £l,OOO. It was decided to seek further information from the Counties' Association regarding the proposed Rivers Control Bill.
Matters concerning the Emergency Precautions Scheme for the district were discussed and it was resolved that householders be asked to return accommodation cards already issued to them, to the chairman, at the earliest possible moment. The overseer’s report was received and future work was discussed and arranged for. Mr Cheetham then conveyed his thanks to councillors for their co-oper-ation during his term of office, and also referred to the co-operation received from the overseer, Mr Cecil Seymour, and the county employees. Councillors Forsberg, Bennett, and MacDonald also expressed their appreciation of the manner in which Mr Cheetham had so ably carried out his duties as chairman. These remarks were heartily endorsed by other councillors present. Mr Cheetham referred to the retirement of the County Clerk. Mr A. W. G. Hollings, and conveyed the thanks of the council to Mr Hollings for the very able manner in which he had carried out his duties. All councillors present conveyed their best wishes to Mr Hollings for a long and happy retirement. Mr Hollings suitably replied.
A special meeting of the council was also held to pass a resolution making a special order to raise a loan of £2,100 towards the construction of Brooke’s Bridge at Mauriceville.
