MARTINBOROUGH

BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Martinborough Borough Council was held last night, there being present the Mayor (Mr C. W. Skill), Crs. M. N. Hardie, C. R. Holmes, W. H. Corfield, T. A. Hamilton and M. Mulvaney. The Mayor extended a welcome to the new Town Clerk (Mr T. E. Beck). The Martinborough School Committee wrote asking the council to permit the screening of an educational picture for patriotic purposes. The request was granted. The sanitary inspector drew attention to a dwelling in the borough where the drainage was defective. It was decided to instruct the inspector to have the necessary repairs carried out. Messrs Gawith, Biss, Griffiths and Blathwayt wrote in regard to the sale of borough sections. The mayor reported that two further sections had since been sold by him. The mayor’s action was approved. The Wairarapa Livestock Auctioneers wrote requesting that the council should pay half the cost of the culvert erected at the saleyards. It was resolved to inform the auctioneers that they had been misinformed in the matter and that they would be required to pay the whole cost of the work. The Wairarapa Electric Power Board submitted a scale of charges for pumping water at the headworks. It was decided to interview the engineer on the matter. Accounts amounting to £307 16s 6d were passed for payment. The works committee reported that the repairs, at the headworks had been nearly completed. Several streets had been sealed, and general repairs carried out during the month. The ranger reported having dealt with 9 head of stock and registered 34 dogs during April. The balance-sheet for 1940-41 was adopted. In retiring from the chair, the mayor welcomed the mayor-elect. Or. C. R. Holmes, and thanked councillors for their co-operation during his term of office. A vote of thanks was passed to the mayoress for her work on behalf of the borough during the past year. Patriotic Day. The profits of the recent gala day held for patriotic purposes was £785 13s lid. The gross takings totalled £BO6 19s 6d.
