Hockey Notes.

Although the ground was somewhat heavy as a result of the recent rains, conditions generally were good for hockey on Saturday, when the muchdiscussed game between the Hinemoa and Kia Kaha teams took place. The visitors, having held Excelsior to a low score, were regarded as contestants who would not easily be beaten —and so it proved. In the first half the local ladies were definitely superior, putting up two goals in the very early stages, and executing some very fine forward rushes. During the second half, however, the visitors put more sting into their play, and with better co-odina-tion must assuredly have goaled. The Kia Kaha backs proved equal to the occasion, however, and apart from two penalty corners, their back line was not crossed during the whole game. The local ladies displayed a good understanding of positional play generally, and it was this which kept the visitors out. Following up and backing up was not as good as it might be on either side.

Locally, we have more than the makings of a complete junior team if only the sticks were available. The Girl Guides are willing and keen to commence playing, but there is a shortage of sticks. The club, therefore, would be grateful if any players possessing old sticks would pass them on.
