CARTERTON

BIBLE SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the annual meeting of the Carterton branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society held in the Salvation Army Hall, Captain O. L. Ojala presided. The Rev. J. A. Daglish was also present. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Every and Hunt and Miss E. Edwards. .Officers for the ensuing year were ,ejected as follow: —President, the Rev. 'W. F. Stent; vice-presidents, the Revs. J. A. Daglish and W. J. Couling, and Captain O. L. Ojala; secretary, Miss L. H. Edwards; committee, Mesdames Stent, Couling, Ojala? Udy, Every, Peters, Tyler and Nightingale. Mrs V. Wakelin, of the Bible House, Wellington, who was welcomed by the chairman, gave a report of the last year’s work, and congratulated the branch on the large increase in the donations last year. All workers and subscribers were heartily thanked for their efforts. She displayed samples of the Testaments which were being distributed to the troops, and stated that all soldiers, no matter what their nationality, could be supplied with a Testament in their own language. An interesting letter from the headquarters of the Society in London describing an air raid and its effect on Bible Society affairs was read by Mrs | Wakelin, who referred to the difficulties of holding meetings or raising funds in England owing to the disor- j ganisation caused by the war. New j Zealand had an opportunity to show ( its gratitude for its safety in these ( perilous times, said Mrs Wakelin, by t making a special effort to increase its t annual contribution in order to make j up the deficiency in Britain at the present time. Collecting for this purpose t will commence in Carterton at an early date. Afternoon tea was served.

MEAT PROBLEMS ADDRESS AT P. & A. SOCIETY MEETING. An address on meat problems was given by Mr W. A. lorns at the anunal meeting of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society on Saturday. The address was given in committee. Questions, many of which were of a contentious nature, were answered by Mr lorns. He was accorded a vote of thanks. It was decided to hold the ordinary monthly meetings on every third Saturday in the month, at 10.30 a.m. It was suggested that the meeting should be held at a later time, and that the January meeting should be cancelled. The meeting considered, however, that the former arrangements should be adhered to.

Personal Items. ? At the conclusion of the monthly meeting of the Carter Home (Committee on Saturday, the Mayor, Mr D.L. Taverner, said that Mr Josiah Udy had decided not to seek re-election .to the Borough Council. Councillor Udy had been on the Carter Home Committee as a representative of the Borough Council for the past 12 years. During that period he had been a valued member of the committee. The Mayor, on behalf of the committee, thanked Councillor Udy and hoped his services in a private capacity would still be available to the borough of Carterton. The Rev. W. F. Stent, Councillors E. McKenzie and C. J. DeLacey spoke in a similar strain.

Private J. Harp, who is on leave from camp, is to be entertained at a social gathering by members of the Carterton Fire Brigade. Golf.

In the final for the Captain’s Trophy Dudson and Gustofsen tied and will play off later. The best cards handed in were:—H. Dudson, 71, 72, 4, 139; J. V. Gustofsen, 68, 86, 15, 139; B. Whitburn, 69, 81, 10, 140; Geo. Brown, 73, 85, 11. 147; C. K. Goodin, 76, 80, 8, 148. In a game for the Hill and Hughes Buttons played at the weekend Whitburn and Gustofsen beat Hughes and Forbes, 2 up. The following were the best cards handed in for the medal round played on the Taratahi links on Saturday:— Miss Berrill, 88, 15, 72; Mrs Candv' 90, 17. 73; Mrs Orr, 97, 20,‘77; Mrs Colson, 97, 17, 80; Mrs Harrington, 99, 17, 82; Miss Smart, 102. 19, 83; Mrs Murray 102, 19, 83. M.Z. Red Cross Society. The annual meeting of the Carterton branch of the N.Z. Red Cross Society wiU be held in the Dalefield Dairy Co.’s building, Broadway, Carterton, on Wednesday. at 8 p.m. Swimming Club Dance. A dance, the proceeds from which will go towards the soldiers farewell social funds, will be held in the Masonic Hall, Holloway Street, Carterton, tonight. It is being conducted by the Carterton Amateur Swimming Club. Home and School Association. There was a fair attendance at the fortnightly 500 party, held in the bandroom under the auspices of the Home and School Association. The prizes were won as follows:—Ladies: Mesdames Pinfold 1, Steffert 2. Mon: Messrs Ticehurst 1, Collerton 2. ’ I A competition for a case of apples ' was won by Mrs G. Steffert. ,
