The Hon. D. Wilson, Associate Minister of National Service, visited Wanganui today for a parade of members of the Emergency Precautions Scheme and sister units. The death has occurred, a London cablegram states, of Lady Frazer, wife of the noted anthropologist. Sir James Frazer. 0.M., F.R.S.. whose death was announced on Thursday.
The Rev. T. N. Cuttie, Somervell Presbyterian Church, Remuera. Auckland, has resigned to accept a call to the Presbyterian Church in Kaiapoi. He will leave Auckland on June 15.
Aftei - a long period of suffering Mrs Major Bridge, wife of Major Bridge, Divisional Commander of the Salvation Army at Christchurch, died on Wednesday. With her husband. Mrs Bridge became a Salvation Army officer in 1920.
Mr J. B. Mac Ewan, governing director of J. B. Mac Ewan and Co., Ltd., died in Wellington yesterday. He was one of the founders of the dairying industry in New Zealand, and thereafter one of its most prominent figures. He was 75 years of age.
The death has occurred at Fendalton, Christchurch, of Mr B. K. S. Lawrence, one of the first four masters at the Christchurch Boys’ High School.. He was 91 years old. Mr Lawrence was a master at the High School for 33 years, from the foundation in 1881 till 1914, and he was twice acting-head-master.
Mr John Peter Englebretsen, well known in the drapery trade in New Zealand, died in Wellington yesterday morning, after a long illness. Mr Englebretsen was born in Norway 75 years ago, but came to New Zealand al an early age with his parents, who settled in Napier. He,was well known in Wellington many years ago. where he pursued his occupation as a draper before he finally settled in Dannevirke in 1912.
Well known to many New Zealanders, Sergeant R. L. F. Kelly, international Rugby Union footballer, who left Australia last year as a member of an anti-tank regiment, is missing, and is believed to be a prisoner of war. Sergeant Kelly toured New Zealand with the Australian Rugby team in 1936. He represented New South Wales from 1935 onward. He made many friends during the 1936 tour of New Zealand.
The personnel of the delegation which will accompany the Minister of Lands. Mr Langstone, and Mr Coates, member of the War Cabinet, on their mission to America, was announced last night by the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash. He said that in addition to their personal secretaries they would be accompanied by the following:—Mr G. A. Duncan, Director of the Marketing Department; Mr L. J. Schmitt, of the Ministry of Supply, and Mr J. P. D. , Johnsen, of the Customs Department. Mr H. H. Rodd, manager of the Commercial Bank, Christchurch, has been transferred to Brisbane, where he will be taking over the management of the branch there. Mr Rodd's successor is Mr Charles Sussems, at present attached to the visiting inspectors’ office. Melbourne. Mr Sussems opened the Oamaru branch in 1925 and from there took over the management of the Napier office for seven years before leaving for Melbourne. He was in charge of the Napier branch office during the earthquake.
Advice has been received by Air Headquarters, Wellington, that the Distinguished Flying Cross has been awarded to Pilot Officer Irving Stanley Smith. His next-of-kin is his mother, Mrs H. A. Smith, 49 Trafalgar Street. Onehunga. Pilot Officer Smith was born in Invercargill in 1917, and was educated at Whangarei Junior High School and Seddon Memorial Technical College. Auckland. He was selected for a short service commission in the, Royal Air Force in 1939. leaving New Zealand in July of that
