MARTINBOROUGH

COUNTY MEETING NEW LABOURERS' AWARD. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Featherston County Council was held at Martinborough today. The chairman, Mr A. B. Martin, presided. There were also present Councillors R. Smith, D. Cameron, Q. Donald, J. A. McLeod, G. J. Gillies, L. J. Thompson, and R. W. Matthews. An apology for absence was received from Mr J. C. Bidwill. The secretary of the New Zealand Labourers’ Union advised that an application had been filed for a new labourers’ award. An increase in wages and lower working hours were sought. It was decided to oppose the claim through the Counties’ Association. Mr D. H. Riddiford, chairman of the Featherston-Longbush water race committee, wrote stating that no further work was required at the headworks for the present. The E.P.S. headquarters, Wellington, requested that a member of the Labourers’ Union be placed on the local central E.P.S. committee. No action was taken. The ranger reported having dealt with 125 dogs during the month. Accounts for ,£1,856 were passed. The amount was the smallest for many years.
