FEATHERSTON

WAR SERVICE WOMEN’S AUXILIARY. (“Times-Age” Special.) A committee meeting of the Women’s Wai' Service Auxiliary was held at Miss Card’s residence this week. There were present Miss Card, Mesdames Riddiford, Sharp, Davis, and Shepherd. Miss Card was elected president and Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford vice-president. Mrs Davis was heartily welcomed as the Government's representative. The secretary was instructed to write to the Red Cross Society asking for the use of rooms on Thursday of each week. If rooms were available the committee would be in attendance on Thursday afternoon and evening, Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday morning for the next two weeks, when members would be enrolled as transport workers, land girls, domestic war time helpers, first aids, signallers, and bicycle corps. There were also several other branches in which helpers could be enrolled. MINIATURE RIFLES

1 ANNUAL MEETING. ’ The annual meeting of the Featherston Miniature Rifle Club was held this *• week, Mr C. J. Nix being in the chair. • The election of officers resulted:— " President, Mr C. J. Nix; vice-president, Mr W. Johnson; captain, Mr I. Feast; 5 vice-captain, Mr W. Nix; secretary- ' treasurer, Mr J. H. Buck. ■ The season closed with a creditable' 1 financial balance. The club decided to carry on with : 1 shooting this season. 1 Thanks were expressed to Mr R. ■ Williams for the donation of a silver ( cup, to be won outright. ■ It was decided to hold opening night 1 on Wednesday, May 14. , CROQUET BUSINESS AT ANNUAL MEETING. At the annual meeting of members of the Haunui Croquet Club the following officers were elected: —Patroness, Mrs Riddiford; president, Miss Eva Card; vice-presidents, Miss H. Card, Mesdames Wakely, Watson and White; secretary, Miss M. Nix; treasurer. Mrs Hankers; captain, Miss Esma Card; vice-captain. Mrs Hankers; committee, Mesdames Davis, Harkness, Rasmussen, Wilson and Miss Viles. The annual report stated that A and B teams were entered for the inter-

club games which were again played on handicap, and although the teams were not successful in winning either of the shields, some enjoyable days were spent. The Wairarapa tournament was held at Masterton this year, but owing to petrol restrictions was not patronised by club members as much as usual. Miss Esma Card and. Mrs Hankers won the club pairs, and Mrs Hankers was runner-up in the ' level singles. The association A and intermediate buttons were each held for some time during the season by different club members and some close and exciting games took place. The A championship was won by Mrs Hankers, with M. Nix runner-up; the B championship by Mrs W. Card, with Mrs Rasmussen runner-up, and the C championship by Mrs Rasmussen with Mrs Davis runner-up. Congratulations are extended to these winners. They were all very sorry to have to fare- r well Mrs Barry and Mrs Card, who j had left to make their home in Dune- T din. An afternoon was held in their j honour, at which a large number of * playing and honorary members were ‘ present, and gifts were presented from <■ the playing members. One of the' most enjoyable days was that when the ]. president, Miss Eva Card, entertained a the playing members and provided an appetising lunch. Half-hour games * were played for-trophies given by Miss , Card and the day was much enjoyed ' by all. The closing day was held in fine weather with competitions on the lawns. Many thanks were due to Miss Card for her untiring efforts as, greenkeeper. Thanks were also due A to all donors of trophies, the caretaker, . Mr Hayden, and to members for their help during the season. A special word of thanks was' due to the Press, and to the auditor, Mr Nicie. V

Personal. Mrs Selicia Smith, of Wellington, well known in Featherston some years ago as Miss Faber, has been visiting Mrs R. McLaren, Masterton. She is now the guest of Mrs N. C. C. Shepherd. St. John's Parish. A meeting of St. John’s parishioners is to be held in the Parish Hall after the service on Sunday evening. Euchre Tourney. A reminder is given to patrons of the euchre tourney and dance to be I held in the Kaiwaiwai Hall tomorrow I night.
