FIGHTING TO WIN

GENERAL SMUTS ON WAR OUTLOOK HITLER’S CHANGED TONE. GERMANS ASKED TO FACE LONG WAR. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Dav, 11.25 a.m.) PRETORIA, May 8. “We are fighting to win and we are going to win," said General Smuts, in a speech. ‘'Hitler not long ago promised the Germans that he would win the war in 1941. He did not repeat this in his speech a few days ago, but asked the Germans to make a still greater effort, because there was going to be a long war. This is good news, because a long war means certain defeat for Hitler. The war effort will give South Africans a wider outlook and lay the foundations for a new South Africa.”
