COUNTY COUNCIL BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna County Council, the chairman, Mr J. B. Carruthers, presided, the following being also present: Councillors C. T. Richardson, P. Davies, G. Houlbrooke, F. Goggin, G. Bailey, R. W. Kebbell, H. N. Kebbell, J. J. Dougherty, and A. J. Perry. Leave of absence was granted Councillor S. Davie. The Clerk. Mr W. N. Richardson, reported on the finances as follows: — County Fund Account, net debit balance. £2303 Is Id; Bridge Loan £BOOO, credit, £3790 9s 3d; Bridge Fund Account, credit, £349 19s sd; Worker's Dwelling Loan £1550 Account, cr, £8 2s 3d; Rural Housing Loan, credit, £575. Receipts since the last meeting total £271 5s 4d. Accounts amounting to £1947 0s 2d were passed. •- The Health Inspector, Mr J. M. Swain, in his half-yearly report covering the period from October 1. 1940, to March 31, 1941, stated that no cases of infectious disease occurred during the period and that present indications were satisfactory. Five building permits had been issued, three for the erection of new dwellings, and two for alterations and additions to dwellings, the total value of the work being £3361 10s. The usual perusal of plans and specifications, also inspection of structural work during the course of construction had been made and a good standard of work was being maintained. A total of seven new sewerage drains and septic tanks had been installed. Complaints of various natures had been investigated and where defective conditions were evident, steps to overcome these had been taken. General conditions pertaining to sanitation throughout the district were fairly satisfactory. The Traffic Inspector (Mr W. G. Milne) in his monthly report said that six driving tests were conducted, five applicants being successful. The conduct of traffic generally throughout the county was found to be satisfactory. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote stating that there was little likelihood that extra petrol licences would be issued during the forthcoming local body elections, and asked the Council to do whatever possible to meet the situation.—The Clerk stated that he had arranged to have a polling booth at Newman for the election. This would save the voters the trouble of going to Hamua or the Eketahuna booths.
The Engineer, Mr W. C. Duffill, presented his monthly report, which was adopted. As this was the last meeting of the council before the election, Mr Carruthers took the opportunity of thanking the councillors for the support accorded him during the past three years. The assistance and co-operation of the inside and outside staffs had been an encouraging factor and he was sure the new council could rely on the loyalty of the staff. He wished them alb success at the elections.
All councillors present paid a tribute to Mr Carruthers’s leadership and en-, dorsed his references to the staff. Messrs Richardson and Duffill returned thanks on behalf of the staff, assuring the council that it could rely on the staff's loyalty at all times. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the Press. . It was decided that the estimates and annual meeting of the council be held on June 6- commencing at 10 a.m. Soldier Entertained. Despite the wet conditions there was an excellent attendance at the Anglican Schoolroom on Saturday night, the occasion being an entertainment in honour of Private Don Fallaver. Mr V. Wimsett carried out the duties of M.C. and the music was supplied by Miss Muriel Smith and Mr K. Marenzi. During the evening Mr Max Smith contributed much appreciated vocal items in pleasing style. The ladies’ committee served supper, at the conclusion of which the Mayor, Mr W. Olsen, asked Private Fallaver to accept a gold wristlet watch. In doing so Olsen referred to the guest’s many sterling qualities and wished him God Speed and a safe and quick return. Musical honours were accorded the recipient, who briefly returned thanks for the gift and good wishes that accompanied it. Privates H. Husband, D. Fauvel and A. Boustead, who spent weekend leave at their homes, were also the recipients of gifts of cigarettes. Personal.
