CENTRAL SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE HEADMASTER’S REPORT. EMERGENCY PRECAUTIONS SCHEME PROPOSED. The Masterton Central School committee held its monthly meeting in the school last night. There were present Messrs J. E. MeV. Calwell (chair), W. R. Nicol, S. I. Gibbs, P. 11. Shaw, W. Butler and A. E. Nelson. An apology for absence was received from Mr J. H. Cole. The financial statement showed a satisfactory position and accounts amounting to £33 16s 5d were passed. In connection with the School Committees’ Federation it was decided to continue affiliation and the hon. secretary was instructed accordingly. The Headmaster, Mr E. G. Coddington, who was also present, read his monthly report. The report showed that the roll number was slowly rising. Attendance had been affected by sickness —chiefly mumps. However, at no time had the percentage fallen below 86 per cent. An impressive ceremony had been held at the school in connection with Anzac Day and each class had prepared a wreath and placed it upon the Soldiers’ Memorial. The central heating system had been well tried out and was proving very satisfactory indeed. From calculations made it would appear to be both efficient and economical. Apples had been distributed for three weeks and were very popular, tlie only complaint being that only one per pupil was issued. Care was being taken that the streets were not littered and that the apples were wiped before being eaten. An emergency precautions scheme had been worked out for the school and was being enthusiastically practised. All arrangements for the children were carefully thought out and each teacher allotted a duty. Dental fees were coming in quite well and particularly good results were hoped for. Grounds and buildings were in very, good order.

The action of Messrs Nicol and Shaw in having certain lights installed was endorsed.

Messrs Calwell. Braggins and Dixon were appointed the visiting committee for the month.
