AMERICAN AID TO BRITAIN. TRANSFER OF FIFTY TANKERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, May 1. The convention of the United States Chamber of Commerce today passed a motion, pledging the chamber to seek agreement between industry and labour for a moratorium on disputes likely to impede defence. The convention also unanimously approved a motion to give arms production the right of way all the way down the line. In quick response to President Roosevelt’s request, the Maritime Commission is placing 50 American tankers in British service within a few days. The tankers will transport oil from the south to an American port in the north from where the oil can be transferred to British tankers. Senator Guffey, in the Senate today, urged that the convoying of ships to Britain should begin immediately "because of the peril that confronts us.” The President today asked Congress to appropriate 20.000,000 dollars to complete the inter-American highway to Panama. The road has been completed to south of Mexico City, but to reach the canal it must cross difficult jungle terrain.
