FEATHERSTON

HOME GUARD TRAINING ACTIVITIES. ("Times-Age” Special.) Close on 70 members of the Home Guard paraded at the Featherston Town Hall on Tuesday evening when company and rifle drill was held. Instructor Halpin’s school of signallers also put in a full evening and show marked signs of progress. A Sunday parade which will be preceeded by a short church-service, will be held on the first Sunday in May. Physical drill, conducted by Sgt. J. H. Buck, is a regular feature of the parades, and the last 30 minutes of each weekly meeting is dedicated to this. The unit will parade at 2.30 p.m. on Anzac Day at the Drill Hall and march to ’the Anzaac Hall in company with the returned men to take part in the Anzac service. Recruits of an excellent type are still joining up and the E.P.S. side of the movement is also being strengthened. SCHOOL COMMITTEE BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Featherston School Committee, in'the absence of the chairman, Mr J. W. Holland, who sent an apology for unavoidable absence, Mr C. F. Buck presided. The* financial statement showed a credit balance of £9O 6s 4d. Accounts totalling £l4 0s Id were passed. The Wellington Education Board advised that the tender of Mr F. C. Benton had been accepted fox* the construction of a storm water drain at the Featherston School. The Director of the Post Office Savings Bank wrote advising the headmaster that as a mark of appreciation of the service rendered during the past year the Postmaster-General had approved of the payment to the Featherston School Committee of 10s to be spent either on the school library or in the encouragement of school sports. The director also pointed out that school savings during the year, after deducting withdrawals, had amounted to £9,564. The Wellington Education Board further advised that the beadmaster’s office would be furnished with an electric heating point and the floor covered with linoleum and felt and certain necessary alterations made, also that specifications for the provision of 86 tables and chairs for use in the secondary department had been prepared. The secretary of the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural clubs (Featherston group) wrote pointing out that the Featherston School was the only one in the group not holding a school judging of calves and lambs reared by children attending the school. It was felt that Featherston should try to fall in line with the other schools organised in the group. It was decided that .if sufficient support was forthcoming the wishes of the club in this respect should be met. The Wellington Education Board in returning the accounts which had been forwarded for audit congratulated the committee on the way the accounts had been presented. Mr C. F. Buck was again appointed to represent the school committee on the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs Committee. Anzac Day Donations. Following the custom of her mother, the late Mrs Sinclair, who for a number of years has each Anzac Day forwarded a donation of £ 1 to the Mayoress,* Miss Card, for the Soldiers' Graves Committee, in memory of her son, Private J. Sinclair, who is buried in Featherston Cemetery, a similar donation has been received from her daughter, Mrs F, Hansen, Lower Hutt. Euchre Tourney & Dance. A reminder is given of the euchre tourney and dance to be held in Kaiwaiwai Hall on Saturday night when a good evening’s entertainment is assured. There was a good attendance at the Fire Brigade’s euchre tourney which was held oil Tuesday night. Prizes were won by Mrs Kinsey 1, Mrs P. Habib 2, and Mrs Watson 1, and Mr Rasmussen 2. Golf Opening Postponed. Lady golfers were to have held their opening day yesterday on the Gum Grove links, but the event was postponed owing to the rough weather. Poppy Day Sales. A sum of £32 3s 6d, with a little more still to come in, was the result of the Poppy Day in Featherston and district. Personal. Mrs A. McLeod, who has been in the Home of Compassion, Island Bay, has now recovered sufficiently to return home. Mrs J. W. Holland is undergoing treatment in Greytown Hospital.
