FARMERS’ UNION
YEAR IN SHADOW OF WAR MASTERTON BRANCH ANNUAL MEETING. ADVICE ON TRUCK IMPRESSMENT. “Our activities in the past year have been overshadowed by the war and we have limited them to matters only of primary importance,” said Mr J. M. James, who presided over a small attendance at the annual meeting yesterday of the Masterton branch of the Farmers’ Union. “The first essential,” he said, “is that we must win this war, and I believe the primary producers are doing their share towards that object. In response to the appeal for increased production the producers put their shoulders well to the wheel and the result was excellent. The position has changed seriously now but we shall just have to do cur best to face up to it.” Advice was received that it had been decided to hold the annual interprovincial conference, the work of which was regarded as very important under present circumstances in primary industry. Proceedings would be limited to a day and a night. ■ The secretary. Mr R. H. Williams, read the latest regulations concerning the impressment of motor trucks, which require that appeals against impressment must be made within 24 hours of the receipt of notice. Mr R. E. Chamberlain said it should be made clear who was the authority with whom the farmer was to get in touch, if he wished to appeal, and also the simplest way of doing this. Mr Williams said the No. 2 Transport Licensing Authority was the man to contact; the simplest means was to ring the Post Office and dictate a telegram addressed to the Authority. Officers elected were:—Chairman. Mr J. M. James; vice-chairman. Mr J. C. Cooper; committee. Messrs C. C. Jackson. J. M. James. J. C. Cooper. A. Forsberg. L. T. Daniell. .1, G. Wingate |W. James, R. E. Chamberlain, R? 'McKenzie; delegates to provincial executive. the committee: interprovincial conference delegates. J. M. James. L. T. Daniell, C. C. Jackson. Mr J. M. James paid a tribute to the national president, Mr W. W. Mulholland. “We have an excellent man at our head,” Mr James said. “He has the interests of the farmers at heart and. at the same time he is fair to the other side." Both Mr James and Mr Cooper paid tribute also to the work of the Wairarapa Provincial Executive President. Mr Hugh Morrison. It was decided to place on record the branch's appreciation of the services of Messrs Mulholland and Morrison.
