LADIES’ HOCKEY

OPENING OF THE SEASON. The hockey season opened on Saturday in glorious weather, with the first round of the competitions under the auspices of the Ladies’ Hockey Association. Because of the bad weather the task of preparing the ground had been delayed and the surface was a little tufty in places. This, however, did not slow up the game, which, for an opening game was extremely fast throughout. The local ladies put up a good performance to beat College Old Girls by 5-1. The losers were by no means disgraced. Last year’s -training in positional play stood the local players in good stead. The combination was particularly good. With attention to some of the finer tactical points and regular attendance at practices and lectures, this team should give a good account of itself.

The College Old Girls’ team, however, will become a serious contender for the championship as the season progresses, if it pays attention, to eqaehing and to some particular points of play. Us forward line would be a very dangerous one if the members learned to throw the ball about more and to keep good positions. The team is young, well balanced, and has all the potentials of speed and good fighting. Its goalie put up a good performance without pads. At times its attacking movements became dangerous indeed, and were only nullified by offside play. The game was thoroughly enjoyable, and a special word of encouragement is due to the visiting team. Personal. Privates Graham' Skeet, Ralph Day and Eric Dennes were home on weekend leave from Palmerston North Military Camp. Harvest Festival. The Harvest Festival services in St. Luke’s Church, . Greytown, were well attended yesterday. Canon Sykes was the preacher at the morning service, and the Rev. Hibbs, of Featherston, at the evening service.
