SHOW AFFAIRS

1 WAIRARAPA & EAST COAST f SOCIETY. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society was held at Carterton on Saturday. The president, Mr J. A. McLeod, presided over a good attendance of members.

Prior to the commencement of business the president referred to the loss the society had suffered in the death of Mr John Standen. “He was a member of the society for such a long period that no one knows how long he served.” commented Mr McLeod. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried in silence.

The secretary, Mr L. 11. Smart, submitted a balance-sheet for the year ended March 31, 1941, which disclosed a credit balance of £9Ol IGs, as compared with £SGO 15s Id last year. “The society is to be congratulated on the results shown in the balance sheet,” said the treasurer, Mr Geo. Brown. Before the show was held the question was raised whether to carry on or not. The results had shown that the decision to carry on was the correct one. Mr Brown congratulated Mr Smart on the way he had kept the expenditure down to a minimum. Mr McLeod expressed his pleasure at the financial results of the year’s working. “The outcome is the result

of the committee’s own hard work,” he added.

Mr Smart stated that the Wairarapa Rugby Union owed £5O in rent for the Showgrounds. The union was low in funds but' could pay £l5. “The Rugby Union has proved a gold mine to us in the past,” stated Mr A. E. Hall in moving that a rebate of £35 on the rent owed by the union be made. He considered the union should receive the society’s assistance. Mr Geo. Brown seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.

It was suggested by a member that the union be requested to play a Hawke’s Bay representative match at Carterton. “That is the business of the union,” observed Mr McLeod.

The Defence Department was granted permission to use the Showgrounds on May 7, when 1000 men and 300 vehicles would use the grounds. The Wairarapa district committee of the New Zealand Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs was granted permission to use the showgrounds on Friday, May 30, for the annual inter-club stock judging contests.

A large number of the members of the League of Mothers attended the church parade at St. Andrew’s Church yesterday, morning, when the Rev. W. J. Couling delivered a most impressive address, “To Mothers.” He pointed out the difficulties confronting both parents and children in those troubled days. Obedience and self-discipline must be learnt in the home, if children were to be fitted to resist temptations, when they set out alone in the world. Love of God and country should be taught from infancy, and parents could not commence too early to develop sympathy, understanding and companionship between themselves and their children. So many young people today looked upon home as a boarding house —simply a place to eat and sleep. He hoped that the day of the family pew might come again, as example was the greatest teacher of all. According to whether young people set cut from their homes imbued with right or wrong thoughts and principles they were a power for cither good or evil in the world.

The League Choir lead the singing and Mrs Ardrey sang a solo.
