SUNDAY SERVICES

ALL LARGELY ATTENDED. The Salvation Army services yesterday were all largely attended. The morning, afternoon and evening meetings being appreciated. Mr Ben Roberts, M.P. for Wairarapa, presided and extended a welcome to Commissioner Smith. He was accompanied on the platform by the Deputy Mayor, Councillor McKenzie and Mrs McKenzie, Mr E. T. Beaven, County Cleric and Mrs Beaven, Councillor C. J. DeLacey, Mr Gordon Hughan, J.P., Deputy Superintendent J. Churchouse and Fireman Matson, of the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade, Mr C. A. Chennells, representing the R.S.A., Mrs F. Tyler. Scoutmaster Banks and several Salvation Army officers. During the. afternoon the Commissioner delivered a stirring address on “The Private Life of William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army.” He spoke of the wonderful work William Booth had accomplished for the uplifting of humanity during his long years of ministration. General Booth was born in Nottingham in 1829 and when only a youth commenced his great mission, which had grown and extended to all parts of the world, and was doing splendid work for suffering humanity. The Commissioner spoke for over an hour and at the end of his address vzas given an ovation. Besides the Commissioner's address the following programme was presented: —Opening song, “Praise My Soul:” prayer, Major Hultquist; Petone Band (26 members), “There'll Always be an England,” in which the audience joined heartily in the chorus; Captain Ojala presented the chairman; scripture reading from the book of Iseriah Mrs Commissioner Smith; vocal solo, Major Chandler; cornet duet, “Comradeship,” Petone Band; courtesies were then given by the Deputy Mayor. The Doxology completed a most enjoyable and profitable afternoon. There was a large attendance at the evening meeting.
