SITES FOR LILY BULBS

DO THE WORK THOROUGHLY. When preparing sites for lily bulbs, it is well to remember that they will not need to be disturbed for many years. It is necessary, therefore, to do the work thoroughly. When planting separate clumps, remove the top spit, making the hole at least two feet in diameter. Then mix leafmould or peat with the subsoil and incorporate a little of either of these materials with the top spit, returning it to the hole.

The depth of planting varies according to the type and size of bulb. The smallest should be set four inches deep and the largest six to eight inches. The measurement in each case is taken from the nose of the bulb, not from the base.
