RIPENING PEARS

TRY THIS METHOD. Obtain a well made wooden box and a quantity of hay. Place a layer of hay at the bottom of the box and arrange on this some of the pears, so that they do not touch one another. Cover these with hay and put in another layer of fruit. This is repeated until the box is full. Finish with a good layer of hay and on this rest a board which has a heavy weight, such as a few bricks, on top. In a week or a little more, examine the pears and in many cases it will be found that they are in perfect condition for eating. By this means it is easy to lengthen the season when pears are fit to eat and so avoid a glut at any one time.
