Private W. H. Carle, Third Echelon, Second N.Z.E.F. Overseas, has returned to New Zealand on sick leave and is staying at his home in Masterton. Dr W. N. Benson has been elected an honorary life member of the Otago branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand in recognition of his admission as a 'Fellow of the Royal Society.
The Wairarapa Men’s Hockey Association in its annual report extends its thanks to Mr Stan Moor for the excellent services rendered by him as secretary during last season, and for his untiring efforts in forwarding the interests of the game in the Wairarapa. Mr F. L. Frost, M.P., has been advised by the Marine Department that he has been appointed the Government nominee on the New Plymouth Harbour Board for three years from April 30. He will replace Mr J. R. Cruickshank. who has been the Government nominee on the board for the past 14 years.
The following members represented the Masterton Catholic Club at. the Catholic Conference and competitions held in Wellington over Easter when they were successful in winning the Francis Redwood Memorial Shield:-— Debate, Messrs J. Dwyer and W. Orange; religious questions, Mr J. M. Murphy; oratory, Miss Norah Doyle; elocution, Mrs J. M. Murphy; impromptu speech, Mr W. Orange: billiards, Mr J. Sutherland; tennis, Mr P. Greenlees.
At the thirtieth annual conference of the United District Fire Brigades’ Association at Wairoa. the election of officers resulted as follows: —President. Superintendent W. Lawry (Pahiatua); vice-presidents, Deputy-Superintend-ent W. Boston (Featherston), Secretary, W. A. Wyatt (Palmerston North). Foreman R. Colwill (Hastings), Third Officer W. Drieberg (Lower Hutt); treasurer, Superintendent J. A. Chambers (Waipukurau); secretary, DeputySuperintendent A. S. Annand (Waipukurau); hon auditor, Mr G. R. Cook (Waipukurau). The Prime Minister. Mr Fraser, who will leave soon for Britain, last night attended a concert given in his honour in the Town Hall, Wellington. The national president of the New Zealand Labour Party, Mr James Roberts, the Minister of Finance. Mr Nash, the Minister of National Service. Mr Semple, and the Minister of Lands. Mr Langstone, expressed the confidence of the party and the Government in Mr Fraser and wished him a successful trip and a safe return. Mr Fraser was presented with a leather travelling bag and two framed National Savings certificates to the value of £2O.
