BOWLING

MASTERTON CLUB. J. V. GORDON TROPHIES. (Notes by “The Bowler.”), Yesterday afternoon the final for the J. V. Gordon trophies was played between L. Downes and S. Holdsworth (s), and Murdoch and McKay (s). Holdsworth was on scratch, and McKay received three points. After an interesting game Holdsworth and his partner succeeded in winning by a few points. ■ Guthrie-Smith played as substitute for. Murdoch..

The green naturally, after the heavy rains, was very slow, the weather was cold, and the competitors played with their overcoats on, but notwithstanding these, the play generally was good. I congratulate both the winners and the runners-up. Details of the game are as follow: McKay started off well and at the 3rd head the scores were, McKay 11 (including his handicap of 3), Holdsworth 0. Holdsworth improved his position at the 6th head and at the 11th head the scoreboard showed McKay 18. Holdsworth 14. On the next three heads Holdsworth put on 7 points, and on the 17th head had a substantial lead of 7 points. McKay and his partner were now playing good bowls and reduced their opponents' lead, and on the 20th head were only 4 points behind. McKay and his partner scored a single on the last head, leaving Holdsworth and his partner the winners by three points, the final scores being, Holdsworth 27, McKay 24.
