INCREASE IN AREA UNDER CULTIVATION AND ERECTION OF ADDITIONAL •» FACTORIES. ANNOUNCED BY MINISTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. An increase to 25,000 acres of the area sown in linen flax is contemplated in the coming season, compared with 14,000 acres last year, and the erection of new factories is planned by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Sullivan). ' The expansion would mean addition-' al capital and operating expenses of £588.000, and £393.000 had already been spent to establish the industry as a war aid to Britain, said the Minister. A simplified contract would be made with farmers, giving them an ill-in fibre and seed price for- the crop, and ensuring the payment of not less than the present £5 minimum. New factories are to be erected at Gore. Clydevale and Woodlands, with factories proposed for Fairlie, Geraldine and Ward. Natural fibre factories at Washdyke, Winton, Tapanui, Oxford and Methven could bo converted. Offers had been received from overseas to instal machinery which would enable the plants to be used after the war for civilian production.
