EKETAHUNA
CANTEEN FUND SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT RAISED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The whole district has responded most generously to the appeals for donations to the Eketahuna district mobile canteen fund. Great support by personal assistance, goods for sale and money enabled the appeal to be brought to a successful conclusion in ten days. The amount raised, £6OO (New Zealand currency) will be cabled to London through the National Patriotic Fund Board, Wellington, with the request that the canteen be named "Eketahuna District, New Zealand.” This canteen will be a small acknowledgment of the wonderful courage shown by the people of Britain. Personal. Constable and Mrs A. Ede, of Rongotea, were the guests of Mr and Mrs J. Metcalfe for the week-end. The death occurred suddenly on Saturday of Mr. Agustav Schultz, at ths age of 80 years. GOLF CLUB SEASON OFFICIALLY OPENED. The official opening of the 1941 golfing season in Eketahuna took place yesterday afternoon, when a large number of members were present. Before setting out to take part in a mixed Canadian foursome competition, the members were briefly addressed by the president, Mr R. Dickson, who, after wishing one and all an enjoyable time on the links, formally declared the season opened. The winners of the Canadian foursome were Miss P. O’Donnell and Mr Watson Pryde, with Miss P. O'Regan and Mr Ben Bradley runners-up. Afternoon tea was provided by the lady members. The opportunity was taken during the tea adjournment to make a presentation to Mr W. J. Henderson, who had been secretary of the club for many years, and Mrs Henderson. In making the presentation. Mr Dickson referred to the large amount of work both Mr and Mrs Henderson had done for the club during their association with it. The members of the club regretted their departure from Eketahuna, and wished them every success in the future. Mr Henderson suitably replied. On Saturday the Eketahuna Area Home Guard carried out field manoeuvres on Mr Wilkie Anderson’s property, on the Alfredton Road. All the districts were represented. The operations were watched by the Wellington Provincial Area Commander, Colonel Beere, who briefly addressed the men at the conclusion of the manoeuvres. Later Colonel Beere received the salute of the 600 Guardsmen who took part. At the conclusion of the ceremony the men partook of afternoon tea at the Domain. Earthquake Shock. A prolonged earthquake shock occurred here at 6.30 o’clock this morning.
