GREYTOWN
HOME GUARD PARADE YESTERDAY. (“Times-Age" Special.) The Greytown Home Guard units held a full day parade yesterday. The unit was transported to Morison’s Bush by motor buses and lorries, accompanied by platoon trucks. The motor cycle unit acted as escort and guarded the cross roads till the convoy had passed. The morning was taken up with field training by the section leaders. The Mounted Rifle troop paraded for the first time with their horses and assisted by' the N.C.O’s. of the "Hill Billies" made a fine show. At 1 p.m. the unit chaplain, the Rev. H. Bloomfield, conducted a church service. In the afternoon the defence of the main Martinborough-Greytown Road was carried out, and useful instruction was received in the sighting of defensive positions. The Mounted Rifles covered the left flank to the Ruamahaunga River, and the motor cycle unit was rushed forward to hold the cutting at the junci.ion of the Featherston, Martinborough and Greytown roads. Colonel R. St. Beere, D. 5.0., V.D., District Commander, and Captain Birch, Area Commander, visited the unit in the morning. Colonel Beere addressed the parade and expressed his satisfaction at the work being carried out. LEAGUE OF MOTHERS FAREWELL GATHERING. The League of Mothers’ choir met in the Parish Hall, Greytown, on Friday afternoon to bid farewell to Mrs Geo. Robinson, who will leave Grey town on Tuesday for Christchurch. Mcsdames I-I. Farley and H. G. Carter played two pianoforte duets. Mrs Farley sang "My Prayer" and “My Treasure.” Mrs Bull, on behalf of the choir, presented Mrs Robinson with a small gift. She was accorded musical honours. Mrs Bull said that she hoped the guest of honour would enjoy good health and happiness in Christchurch. Mrs Robinson thanked Mrs Bull for her kind remarks and the choir for the gift. Mrs York presented Mrs Robinson with a posy made by Mrs W. J. Knell. Afternoon tea was supplied by choir members. CROQUET COMPETITION WINNERS. The Greytown Croquet Chib held an honorary members gathering at Memorial Park on Saturday afternoon in ideal weather conditions. A number of competitions were held, the winners being:—Peg: Mesdames Anker, York, Nichols and A. Haigh. Golf: Mcsdames Gregor and Horton. French: Mrs 1-1. Carter and Miss Stephens. Afternoon tea was served in the pavilion by playing members. Personal Items. Mesdames F. Thomson and McCarthy, Miramar, who have been staying with Mr and Mrs S. Shedden, Main Street, returned to Wellington yesterday. Mrs F. Pound, of Lower Hutt, was a visitor to Greytown last week. Mr Thornton, Wellington, is the guest of Mr and Mrs J. F. Thompson, Kuratawhiti Street. Bowling. On Saturday afternoon a team from 'he Park Club visited Grey town and nlayed a game for the centre fours badges. The result was a win for the holders, the score being:—Curtis, Burden, McLeod, Higgison (s) 24, Kilgour, Braggins, Carr, Thompson (s) 14. In the handicap singles McLeod beat Kilgour. Playing for the Dennes Medal, H. B. Wallace defeated the holder, E. Skeet, by one up on the 21st head. A progressive pairs competition was held on Sunday and a large party from the Masterton Club took part. The winning skip was E. Reid, 5 wins, 79 points, and the leads section was won by W. Lewis, 4 wins, 81 points. The hidden number resulted in a tie between J. Reid and H. J. Nightingale. W. Higgison, one of Greytown’s popular skips, is to skip a team from the Park Club which will compete in the Easter tournament at Blenheim.
