BOWLING CLOSING OF SEASON. (“Times-Age” Special.) The official closing of the Carterton bowling green took place on Saturday when forty members participated in the play. Teams representing the President and Vice-President were chosen,' the former winning by one game and losing on the aggregate score by .87 to 100. The following are scores, President teams being mentioned first:— Miss Hamer, Mrs. Robinson, Geo. Riggs, Hughan (s) lost to Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Thompson. F. Harrington, W. Stevens (s), 14/3.3; Booth, Baker, DeLacey, Sorensen (s) drew with Daysh, E. Clark. Underhill, Barber (s), 17/17; Aplin, Hawker, R. Thompson, Tucker (s) drew with Smith, Dudson. Callender, Harp (s), 15/15; G. Steven, Harrington, Harris, Martin (s) beat Kilmis- / ter, Miss Armstrong, Simmonds, G. ? Hart (s), 19/18; Newbould, Meyrick, A. . Thompson, Barr (s) beat Beaven, McCarty, W. Hart, Whyte (s), 21/16. LADIES' MATCH. During the weekend, six members of tne Island Bay Ladies’ Club journeyed to Carterton and played a return match with the local ladies’ club. Upon arrival the visitors were given a very hearty welcome and were entertained at morning tea. Some excellent, bowling was witnessed by a large number of visitors to the green. Afternoon tea was provided in the ladies' pavilion. The games and players are as follow. Mrs. Higginbotham (s) lost to Miss Lamb, Mrs. Thompson Mrs. Robinson (s), 20/15. The visitors returned home at 5.30 o’clock. GOLF PLAY ON CARTERTON LINKS. Excellent, practice was indulged in on the Carterton golf links on Saturday afternoon, there being many members present. The official opening will take place on Saturday. April 19. The greens and fairways played well. SALVATION ARMY LOCAL GOLDEN JUBILEE. The golden jubilee of the Carterton of the Salvation Army will be . ’jbrated from April 17 to April 21. OWMarch 20. 1891, the “first shot” in the launching of a corps in Carterton was held in the Assembly Hall, which was long ago destroyed by fire. In the army ring on that occasion were Major Robinson (Divisional Commander). Captain Kerr, Captain R. Sutherland. Captain Maria Rix, Lieut. Barreball (the two first officers stationed at Carterton) and a few members from Masterton. including Sister Alice Gaulton (Mrs. F. E. Tyler) who still resides in Carterton, and “Dad" Tustin, wellknown to early settlers of Carterton. The meeting was a successful one in every way, but during the outdoor gathering some eggs were thrown into the ring. Despite the antagonism of a band of hooligans early difficulties were overcome and today the Army has a flourishing local corps. MUNICIPAL SILVER BAND ANNUAL MEETING. There was a fair attendance at the twenty-second annual meeting of members of the Band. The balance-sheet’ showed a credit balance of £IOB 18s lid. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr W. ' M. Nicholls and C. E. White; band committee, Messrs A. S. Kay, M. Banks, P. L. Beere. H. T. Ray, J. Good, A. Adams. J. Billington and W. Spooner. BELVEDERE GATHERING BRIDE-TO-BE HONOURED. On Friday evening the Belvedere School was crowded by residents from all parts of the district, the occasion being a parcel evening and dance tendered to Miss Eileen Garrett in honour of her approaching marriage. The . Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss V. Knowles and Mr D. McKenzie. Mr A. E. Reid made an efficient M.C., and at an appropriate interval in the proceedings, he called upon Miss Garrett to accept and open the large array of parcels. Mr. Ticehurst, on behalf of Miss Garrett suitably returned thanks. The music was supplied by Mrs. Rogers and much appreciated extras were played by Mr. Edwards. The hostesses were Mrs. Zabell, Junr., Mrs. H. Sage, Misses D. Nimot and M. Waterson. Supper was provided by the ladies of the district. Dancing was brought to a close at an early hour on Saturday

morning by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne" and the National anthem. Personal. Mrs. Purcell, of the Manawatu district. who had been a visitor to Carterton during the past week, left for Masterton this morning. Palm Sunday Service. There was a very large congregation at St. Mark’s Church.. Car ter ton, yesterday morning when a service in connection with Palm Sunday was conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. W. F. ' Stent. In the course of his remarks to the congregation, Mr. Stent referred to the fact that the remodelling of the Vicarage had been almost completed. Altogether seventeen employees had been working with a will, and he. along with his family, were pleased to realise that they would soon be back in their home. Social Gatherin''. On Saturday evening the first of a series of social gatherings in connection with the Carterton Bowling Club and Tennis Club was held in the Masonic Hall. Holloway Street, and proved very enjoyable. The time was spent in dancing, interspersed with vocal and other items and community singing. Music for the dance was played by Udy’s Orchestra. Mr. Geo. Riggs was an efficient M.C. Those giving items —Mr. H. B. Keenan. Miss IVI. Lawrence, and Mr. Tom Udy—were warmly encored. Supper was providI ed.
