A ruling just given by the New Zea,s land Tennis Umpires’ Association on “ an incident at the last Varsity teams ,[■ tournament declares that the referee y was correct in his decision to replay 9 the women's singles between Misses _ Fears and Spackman, owing to an irre- . gularity by an umpire in appealing to via spectator on a doubtful point. In the first match. Miss Spackman s was the winner, but in the replay Miss i Pears won. The Tournament Commity tee then overruled the second match i and awarded the match to Miss Spackman. The Umpires' Association points • v out that all matches after the incident s were invalid and that the real and just - winner of the event was not obtained r The matter upsets the award of a tennis blue. ’
