MALAYA DEFENCES
MORE TROOPS & R.A.F. UNITS , REACH SINGAPORE SIR R. BROOKE-POPHAM’S DECLARATION. GREAT STABILISING INFLUENCE. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, March 30. According to an agency message, Air Chief Marshal Sir Robert BrookePopham, Comander-in-Chicf in the Far East, announced in an official communique the arrival of British and Indian troops and Royal Air Force units at Singapore. These R.A.F. units are the first to reach Malaya from the United Kingdom since the outbreak of the war. Sir Robert declared that the greatly increased strength in the Far East was a threat to no one. On the contrary, it was a great stabilising force and an influence for peace. The fact that the troops could be spared from other theatres of war for service in Malaya and despite the Nazi campaign against shipping, he said, was a cause for very considerable satisfaction.
