MARTINBOROUGH
RED CROSS SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Martinborough branch of the Red Cross Society was held on Friday night, when there was a large attendance of members and supporters. Mr D. C. Pryor presided. The report and balance-sheet showed that the branch was in a very satisfactory position. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr D. C. Pryor (re-elected); secretary, Mrs E. C. Jolly (re-elected); treasurer, Miss J. Hibberd (re-elected). A strong committee was elected, including representatives of the various districts. The chairman introduced Miss Barnett, Matron of the Masterton Hospital, and in doing so alluded to her many acts of kindness to the V.A.D’s. from the Mart'inborough branch during their training. Miss Barnett, in an interesting and instructive address, complimented Martinborough oh its progress, and said that the branch had more members than those in several of the larger centres. She suggested that competitions might be arranged with other branches to stimulate interest. The speaker urged members to continue their studies, and make themselves competent for service in case of emergency or major disaster. A vote of thanks to Miss Barnett was carried by acclamation. TENNIS CLUB YANKEE TOURNAMENT.On Saturday, afternoon a Yankee tournament was held on the tennis courts. There were several stalls and side shows in operation in aid of the patriotic appeal. After several well-contested games the tourney resulted in a win for Mrs T. Gold; of Greytown, and Mr Jones, of Masterton.' Cake and sweets stall, afternoon tea, and competitions all did brisk business, and about £9O was netted as the result of the effort, including several generous donations.
