YOUNG FARMERS
ALFREDTON CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. I “Times-Au o ” Special.) The annual meeting of the Alfredton Young Farmers' Club was held in the local hall. There were 15 members present, and Mr. H. Edmonds presided. The third annual report stated inter alia: Firstly I would like to pay my highest tribute to the club's most efficient secretary for his full co-operation at all times. Also to the executive and dance committees who have worked so hard during the past year. Their cooperation with the secretary and myself has been most satisfactory. Four meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of 15. Unfortunately, owing to petrol restrictions and to some members joining the Army, the attendances at' meetings have been a little disappointing. Our membership is 26 financial members. This is the highest membership in the club's history, which on the whole is most .satisfactory. I would like to thank the club very sincerely for that very handsome wedding present which was greatly appreciated and most unexpected. The club wishes to thank the following for their addresses during the past year:—Mr. J. S. Heckler on points to study in purchasing a sheep farm; Messrs. Heckler and Napier on selection of Southdown and Romney rams for flock purposes; Mr. Lamont, Department of Agriculture, slides and talks; Mr. J. McFarlane Laing, legal dealing in stock and land; Mr. Murray Finlayson, certification of seeds, etc.; Mr. C. Hay. training the young sheep dog; Mr. O. Dalton, farm accountancy and bookkeeping; Mr. S. Freeman, slides and Dominion executive annual report. The club’s debating qualities improved to a much higher standard during the past year. The club won from Eketahuna by default, beat Masterton and thus reached the semi-finals. Carterton having more experience, proved themselves a better team. However, next year we hope to reach the finals and win.
This club this year scored higher points in the fleece competitions at the Masterton Show, gaining fourth place. It was difficult this year, however, owing to the fleeces not being up to the required standard. Supper has been served after meetings during the year and this has helped in keeping members together. Our thanks are due to. Messrs. Ross and Hull, who so ably' carried out their duties in that direc- ■ tion. In conclusion, on your behalf. I extend my deep appreciation to our advisory presidents. Mr. J. L. Heckler and Mr. A. A. Napier for the keen interest they have taken in us during the past year;' to Mr. Lamont, who has been of such great assistance at all times: to the hall committee for the use of the hall and to all those who have helped us in the past. The report was signed by the president, Mr. H. Edwards. After the report had been adopted the officers for the year were elected. President, Mr. C. Algie; secretary and treasurer, Mr. A. Algie: advisory presidents. Messrs. J. L. Heckler, A. A. Napier. M. Hull and J. McKay: club reporter. Mr. J. Hull. On the motion of Mr. A. Algie. the thanks of the club were extended to Messrs Shirtcliffe and S. Ross, who are leaving the district. for their services in the past. Mr. C. Algie moved a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring president and secretary for their services, the motion being carried by acclamation. The supper concluded the meeting.
