COMPULSORY UNIONISM
ENFORCEMENT DURING WAR OPPOSED. FARMERS ENTER EMPHATIC PROTEST. Arising from a remit sent in by the Pahiatua branch, it was unanimously decided at a meeting of the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday to enter an emphatic protest to the Government against the enforcement of compulsory unionism during the war period. “If the same thing goes on next year that went on this year in the Alfredtoni district then 1 am sorry for the inspectors." said Mr. Kebbell. He added that there was very nearly serious trouble. ■‘Something should be done about it.’’ he said. A Pahiatua delegate quoted instances of recent prosecutions of men by union officials. Mr. Williams referred to the trouble at the Showgrounds at (he last show and gave details of a prosecution in Masterion of harvest workers. Mr. Kebbell: “The position is todav that you either employ a union member or you have to do without one. The preference clause has been cut out of the awards." Mr. J. L. Heckler: “Our protest is long overdue." Mr. J. C. Cooper: “I am in complete agreement with making a protest, but I’m afraid there is not much hope." An emphatic protest was made against the enforcement of compulsory unionism.
