.Sapper Togo Coley, of Masterton. who left New Zealand with the Third Echelon has been promoted to Corporal. The death has occurred of Dr. C. R. M. F. Cruttwell. M.A., D.Litt., Principal of Oxford College, Oxford, from 1930 to 1939, a London cablegram states. Mr. M. E. Lyons has consented to place himself before the National Party organisation as the party's candidate for the Hurunui seat at the General Election. The death occurred this morning of Flora, the infant daughter, aged nine months, of Mr and Mrs S. E. Willoughby, of East Taratahi. The interment will be a private one. Dr. L. Hammond Aitken, M. 8., Ch.B. (N.Z.), F.R.C.S. (Edin.), lecturer in anatomy at the University of Cambridge, has had the honorary degree of M.A. conferred upon him by that university. The death occurred at Napier this morning of Mr. Philip Bree Valpy, who formerly resided in Masterton, at the age of 57 years. He was born in Jersey, Channel Islands, and had been in ill-health for some months. He had lived for many years in Napier and leaves a number of relatives in Masterton. Mr. Patrick Lucas Hamilton, who lives near Pleasant Point, 12 miles from Timaru, yesterday celebrated what he claims is his ,111th birthday. Mr. Hamilton still enjoys good health and his hearing is quite good, but he is not able to read. Mr. Hamilton was born in County Donegal, Ireland, on St. Patrick's Day, in the reign of William IV., and came to New Zealand in 1870. A well-known Napier business man, Mr. George Alfred Peake, has died' at the age of 59 years. Born in Dunedin, Mr. Peake had lived in Napier for 24 years, during which he had been associated with Neal and Close, merchants, and secretary for the Masonic Hotel block, J. Vigor Brown and Co., Ltd., and the Napier Master Bakers’ Association. Mr. William Stephen Judd, wellknown business man in Wellington, and a member of one of the oldest Wellington and Hutt Valley pioneer families, has died in Wellington, aged 77 years. He was born in Belmont, the son of William and Frances Judd. Mr Judd was at one time a member of the Hutt Borough Council, president of the Karori Rifle Club, and president of the Master Plumbers’ Association. Advice has been received in Masterton that Sergeant C. A. Newland, a former member of the First Hawke’s Bay Regiment, who left New Zealand with the First Echelon has been promoted to Lieutenant. Lieutenant Newland, who had taken an active part in the work of the local Territorials for many years prior to the outbreak of war was the first Territorial to volunteer for overseas service at the Masterton Defence Office and was the first man to enlist under.the voluntary system.
