GREYTOWN

HOME GUARD SUCCESSFUL FIELD DAY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Greytown Home Guard spent a full day in field exercises on Sunday. The weather was showery but very little time was lost. The unit chaplain, the Rev. H. Bloomfield, conducted a short service in front of the golf house. The morning was taken up in judging distance and indication and recognition of targets. At lunch time, Q.M.S. A. H. Bull and his staff issued to each man a cup of tea. A canteen was in operation and did good business. In the afternoon, field training was carried out and the section leaders received valuable practice in handling their respective units and making use of cover. The signal section transmitted messages between the various units with a high degree of efficiency. The ambulance section established a first aid post and carried out stretcher drill. The motor cycle section paraded for the first time with, their machines, and engaged in various movements. The next parade of the unit will be held on Wednesday night. RETURNED SOLDIERS MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The committee of the Greytown Returned Soldiers’ Association met on Saturday evening. There were present: Messrs. J. W. Herod (chairman), A. Nisbet (secretary), R. Dyson, W. Hutchings, R. O’Neale, S. Shedden, H. Carter and Miss Higginson. The secretary reported that the branch had 63 financial members. It was decided to secure 50 extra poppies this year. The Wairarapa headquarters are to be asked to appoint a speaker for the Anzac Day service. Personal Items. Mr. Kelvin Thompson, who was severely burned some weeks ago, was well enough to go home on Sunday. Rail Car Complaint. Several would-be passengers to Wellington on Sunday evening were unable to secure seats in the rail car, although application had been made early on Saturday. The Kia Tora girls held a successful dance in the Odd Fellows' Hall on Saturday evening. The music was supplied by Te Tau's Orchestra. The Monte Carlo was won by Mr T. Sugrue and Miss I. Wilson. Mr. R. Eaton carried out the duties of M.C.
