His Excellency the Governor-Gen eral, Sir Cyril Newall, has been advised to remain at Government House for the time being, because of a slight indisposition. Her Excellency, Lady Newall, was present at the Parliamentary Church Service at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul yesterday morning, Dr. H. M. Wilson, Hastings, has been elected president of the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association. Opportunity was recently taken by members of the Masterton Municipal Band to honour Privates J. Allan and S. V. Ihaka, two former bandsmen. In making both men the presentation of cigarette cases the conductor, Mr G. Hutchinson wished them Godspeed and a safe return. The recipients suitably returned thanks. At the annual meeting of the Mangatainoka Young Farmers’ Club the election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr J. E. Hewitt; advisory president, Mr F. ,E. Ward; chairman, Mr J. Aislabie; vicechairman, Mr I. Algie; committee, Messrs K. Pryde, R. Reichenbach, A. Fulton, I. Veale, J. Moynahan; reporter, Mr I. Algie; delegates to Provincial meeting. Messrs F. E. Ward, J. Aislabie and H. Bairstow; hon auditor, Mr J. G. Brechin. The death occurred last week of Mr John Thomas Burrell, Palmerston North, at the age of 87 years. In July of last year, Mr. and Mrs. Burrell celebrated the sixty-fifth anniversary of their wedding and Mrs. Burrell predeceased her husband by a few months. At the age of 29 Mr. Burrell was elected mayor of Arrowtown, and after his removal to Tapanui he was elected mayor there. Early in the present century Mr. Burrell undertook a trip to England. He settled in Palmerston North on his return and remained there for 35 years. He was engaged in business as a draper in Rangitikei Street, and retired from active business life 18 years ago. A pioneer colonist, Mr. George Hurrell, New Plymouth, has died after a short illness, at the age of 87 years. He had a very varied and romantic career. Coming out as a youth from Portsmouth in 1869 he joined H.M.S. Blanche, one of the ships of the Navy which were commissioned for. service in the South Seas to combat blackbirding among the natives of the islands. After some years in this work he left the ship in Wellington and took up farm work at Makara and Karori, later making his way up the coast to Feilding, Wanganui and finally Taranaki, where he took up a bush farm at Ararata. He later retired and had since lived in New Plymouth. , The funeral of the late Mr W. B. Tooby, whose death was recorded in the “Times-Age” on Saturday, took place at Otaki yesterday afternoon and was largely attended. The pall-bearers were Messrs G. W. Milne, A. E. Cook, C A. Hendry, G. F. Milne and L. G. Lowry, M.P. There were a number of Foresters present. The late Mr Tooby was formerly a well known member of the Masterton Methodist Church and was in the choir as far back as 1885, being connected with that church all his life. He was one of the oldest members of the Order of Foresters, having been associated with it for some 62 years. The late Mr Tooby arrived in New Zealand 67 years ago with his parents in.the ship Waikato.
