There was a very poor sale at Feilding today, the market developing an unexpected slackness. Many lines of both sheep and cattle were passed in. uncertainty about the shipping position being stated to be the cause. Fat sheep: Little business was done in the mtyton pens outside buying by butchers. Good lambs and wethers held fair prices, but ewes were slow of sale. Prime lambs made 21s. 3d. to 245. Id., light 15s. 4d. to 17s. 9d., inferior 12s. .Id.; extra prime wethers 225. lOd. to 235. 4d., prime 20s. 7d. to 21s. 10d., unfinished to 19s. 10d.; best ewes 9s. Id. to 10s. Id., second quality 7s. to Bs. 4d., heavyweights 4s. to 75.; prime maiden ewes 17s. to 225. 7d.
Store sheep: A marked change took place in lamb prices, which were back considerably because of uncertainty about the immediate future. Better quality two-tooths made satisfactory rates, but aged lines we’re backward. Best white-faced wether lambs sold for 14s. 2d. to 17s. 7d„ second grade 12s. to 13s. lid., smaller sorts 7s. 6d. to Ils. 6d.; best ewe lambs 16s. 9d. to 18s. 9d., others 14s. to 15s. 3d.; good black-face ewe lambs 14s. lOd. to 16s. 10d., smaller Ils. to 13s. 7d.. others to 9s. 6d.; twotooth wethers 18s. to 195.; two and four-tooth wethers 17s. to 18s. 6d; good two-tooth ewes 30s. to 335. 6d.. others 275. to 28s. 9d.; fpur-year ewes 16s. Id. to 17s. 3d.: best .five-year ewes 15s. to 15s. 9d„ fair sorts 12s.’ 4d. to 145., poor Bs. to 10s. Bd.; best mixed age ewes 175., backward 9s. 2d. to 12s. Id.
Dairy cattle: Few head were offered, springing heifers of quality selling favourably. Good heifers close to profit realised £9 55., others £8 to £8 10s.; heifers in milk £4 17s. 6d. to £6 10s. Store cattle: A dull sale took place, the bulk of the yarding being passed in at auction. Forward three-year A.A. steers made £8 17s. 6d. smaller sorts £7 125.; yearling steers £4; heavy works cows £2 ss. to £3, lighter £1 2s. to £2 25.; yearling Jersey heifers £3 19s.
Fat cattle: Not for some time has the beef market shown such slackness as today, when nearly everything was passed in. On the sales made values were down on recent rates. A.A. cows sold for £7 2s. 6d. to £7 7s. 6d„ second grade £6 10s.; ex-dairy cows, £3 12s. 6d. to £4 17s. 6d.; prime A.A. bullocks £lO. lighter £7 17s. 6d. to '£9; A.A. heifers £7 7s. 6d.; vealers £1 11s. to £1 15s.
Pigs: A smaller entry than usual made late rates. Weaners brought 4s. to Bs.; slips 15s. to 17s. 6d.; stores 225. to 275.
