MARKETING OF MEAT

WAR PROBLEMS CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON. COMMITTEE TO REPORT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The future marketing of all classes of meat products, and the difficulties arising from the present situation respecting shipment of meat were discussed at a conference which was called yesterday by the Minister of Marketing, Mr. Barclay. The meeting was attended by representatives of all sections of the meat industry, and the Minister of Finance, Mr. Nash, was in the chair. Several other Cabinet Ministers and members of Parliament were also present. Mr. Nash, in reviewing the negotiations with the United Kingdom Ministry of Food since the outbreak of war, stated that New Zealand had placed the whole of her production resources at the disposal of the United Kingdom. He also outlined the steps which had been taken to meet the difficulties inevitably arising from war conditions, including the most recent advices in regard to meat shipments obtained from the New Zealand High Commissioner in London for the information of the conference. So that the Government could have the advice and assistance of hll the meat interests, it had been decided to call a conference of representatives of producers and the meat trade. It was the intention of' the Government that any sacrifices which might have to be made under the present war circumstances should be spread as equitably as possible over the whole community. Minister Asks For Co-operation. The Minister of Marketing, Mr, Barclay, then addressed the meeting and asked for the co-operation of all sections not only of the meat trade, but of primary producers throughout the Dominion. On the suggestion of Mr. Barclay, a committee was set up to, ascertain the best method of organising New Zealand's primary production facilities to ensure the minimum loss to the Dominion and to primary producers in the present circumstances. It is the intention of the Government that the committee should begin their deliberations immediately, and submit their recommendations with the least possible delay. The following committee was subsequently nominated by the representatives present: The Minister of Marketing, chairman: Messrs. T. A. Duncan and J Begg. New Zealand Meat Producers Board; Mr. W. W. Mulholland. New Zealand Farmers' Union; Mr. W. E. Hale, New Zealand Dairy Board; Messrs. A. G. Brown and A. Rowlands, freezing companies; Mr. L. Harrison, meat exporters; Mr. A. McDonald, New Zealand Sheepowners' Federation; Mr. D. Allen, stock and station agents; Mr. G. Ross. New Zealand Pig Council; Mr. J. Carter. New Zealand Master Butchers’ Association; Mr. C. Hausmann. New Zealand Bacon Curers’ Association; Mr. E. V. Bevan, shipping companies; Mr. H. R. H. Chalmers. Associated Banks. The committee had a preliminary meeting yesterday afternoon and will continue its deliberations. On completion of its report, the committee will confer with the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board, and then report to the Government.
