PIRINOA

SOCIAL GATHERING PRESENTATION TO SOLDIER. (“Times-Age” Special.) A valedictory social was tendered by lhe Mutual Improvement Association and friends in the Kohunui Meeting House on Thursday evening to Private A. Manihera. The house was well filled. Vocal and musical items were given by members of the Association and visitors. During the evening Mr Waaka Enoka made a presentation of a wallet and fountain pen to the guest on behalf of the Native race of the district. He stated that Private Manihera was a valued member of the Association and would be the first Maori to go overseas from the district. He expressed the hope that Private Manihera would uphold the prestige of his race and the Empire to which he belonged and that he would be spared to return to his homeland. Private Manihera was greeted with loud cheers, and the singing of well known patriotic airs, when he stepped up to receive the presentation. He was presented with a monetary gift by friends and the local branch of the Mutual Improvement Association. Private Manihera feelingly responded and thanked the members of his race for their gifts. He hoped that he would be spared to return to them in

the near future. Dancing was kept up till lhe early hours of the morning. Visitors were present from Gladstone and Carterton.

COMBINED SCHOOLS ANNUAL PICNIC. The day was beautifully fine for the combined picnic of the Pirinoa and Tuhitarata schools on Saturday. There was a large attendance of parents and visitors. The various events were got off in good time and a most enjoyable time was spent. Misses Harvey (principal) and Miss Purnell and Mr Keller of the Pirinoa and Tuhitarata schools, respectively, worked hard to make the ,day a most enjoyable one for all. and they were ably assisted by members of the school committees. The ladies of the district are to be congratulated on the manner in which they catered for the children and adults. The committee is grateful to all those who gave of their sources and monetary assistance which in a large measure contributed to the success of the picnic. In the evening a dance was held in the Memorial Hall. There was a good attendance. Several competitions were held, the winners of which were: Miss McDougall (a work basket donated by Mr Albert Baker) and Mr S. Mclntosh (two boxes of chocolates). The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs Burt and Mr John Tilson. The euchre tourney was won by Mrs Waiwera and Mr R. McDonald, the second prizes going tc Mrs Taylor and Mr Waiwera. The dance music was supplied by a local orchestra and Mr Mclntosh officiated as M.C.

Personal Items. Mrs J. D. McDougall was a visitor at the weekend. Private Manihera. who was accompanied by Messrs H. Carter and S. Te Whaiti. left for Taihape on Friday where he was tendered a send-off on Saturday night by his many friends in that district. Mr Chas. Emmens, who was for some years ago stationed at one of the light-houses in the vicinity of Auckland. is now Chief Light Keeper at the Bluff. Miss McDougall has returned from Auckland. Mr and Mrs F. Lovegrove have left for a holiday which will be spent with friends in the Marlborough Sounds. Mr Chas. Gear is relieving at the local branch store of Messrs Pain and Kershaw. Mr N. Lovegrove, who has been staying with his brother, has returned to Wellington. Sergeant Frank- Rangi. who was a resident of this district, for some years, is a member of the Maori Reinforcements. Mrs Harold Smith has returned to her home from Featherston. Mr and Mrs R. Clark. Masterton, were the guests of Mr and Mrs S. Clark over the weekend. Mrs O'Brien. Longbush. was a visitor at the weekend. Mrs Bragg, who was in the Greytown Hospital has sufficiently recovered to he able to return to her home.

Mr Awa Turei has been appointed foreman for this district under the Native Housing Scheme. Mr Kaki Matenga and his daughter, Mrs J. Himona, and Mr and Mrs J. Rika have returned from a visit to Gisborn e. Mr and Mrs V. Saunders were recent visitors to Wellington.
