COUNTY AFFAIRS
MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. WRITING OFF OF RATES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday, Councillor E. W. Cheetham presiding. Also present were: Councillors D. Bennett, O. Welch, A. Forsberg, A. Gray and J. H. MacDonald. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £1026 6s 9d. The clerk reported that he had issued a permit for the erection of a dwelling at Mangamahoe for Mr Win. Cheetham, with the approval of the Building Controller, and his action was confirmed.
The clerk reported that owing to the estimated cost of construction of Brookes bridge having been increased he had applied to the Local Bodies Loans Board, upon instructions received from the chairman, to increase the amount of proposed loan to £2.100. It was resolved that the action of the chairman be confirmed. The clerk was directed to write to the Tararua Power Board requesting the removal of the poles at each side of Kopuaranga stream bridge now under reconstruction in order to facilitate this work.
The question of arrears of rates was considered, comprising almost entirely native rates, and it was decided that a certain amount be written off as irrecoverable.
It was decided that tenders be called for the tenancy of the Reserve Section 12, Block XIV,. Tararua S.D., formerly occupied by the late Mr T. Palmer, and comprising 8 acres 2 roods 39 perches. The tenders will close on March 31.
The District Engineer requested to be advised whether the Council would expend the whole of the current year’s subsidies, or how much would not be required. The clerk was directed to reply to the letter. The Inspector of Stock advised that the Army Department had made available 20,000 rounds of .303 ammunition for the destruction of wild pigs. Any application should be submitted to him in the first place for approval, before being forwarded to the Internal Affairs Department. The Traffic Inspector advised upon traffic control during the past month, stating that traffic in the county was satisfactory. The Ministry of Supply advised that regulations were gazetted on December 20. 1940, restricting the use _ of galvanised* corrugated iron for building construction and that permits must be approved by the Building Controller. Wellington. The county engineers advised that good progress was being made with the construction of the new Kopuaranga stream bridge, and that a land survey had been made for purpose of acquiring land for road widening at the bridge approaches. The clerk reported that he had communicated with the Railways Department in regard to the position of a certain Railway Reserve, and had also requested information from the Valuation Department as to the rating thereof.
The clerk intimated that evacuation accommodation questionnaire cards would be distributed as soon as the method and cost of posting was advised by the Post Office authorities. The overseer reported satisfactory progress with county work during the past month. Prospective work was discussed and arranged for.
