V.R.C. MEETING AUSTRALIAN CUP WON BY SAUL. I LLOYD STAKES TO HIGH CASTE. ißy Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright > MELBOURNE, March 8. Tho weather was fine and there was a very largo attendance for the fourth day of the V.R.C. races. Phoines made amends for recent defeats by capturing the Leonard Stakes. The honours were with Gold Salute, who was interfered with at the start and just failed to get up. Pure Gold improved on recent efforts and just beat Orcadian for third. High Caste had an effortless win in the C. M. Lloyd Stakes. He has now had 51 starts for 26 wins, two dead heats, 15 seconds and 3 thirds. Stakes won total £30.265, of which £28,310 have been won since coming to Australia. Tranquil Star and Zonda challenged strongly, but were no match for the winner. The time for the last half-mile was 451, which is the fastest last half mile ever timed at Flemington.
Baldasair outstayed his rivals in an interesting steeplechase. Laveur had every chance. A poor jump at the nine furlongs post probably beat Turf Boy. Royal Fire ran a poor race. Consistency was reward in Saul's win in the Australian Cup. Saul had five seconds and two thirds in seven previous starts. He gave a wonderful exhibition of stamina as he was 25 lengths from the leaders seven furlongs from home. Saul's victory completed a double. His trainer, D. Mcßae, is a former cross-country jockey who prepared Baldasair. Hie rider, McCarten, won the Cup previously on Heroic Prince. The favourite, Apostrophe, led to the straight, but his weight anchored him,(Tidal Wave finished well to deadheat in the last stride with Velocity, who surprised with a forward showing. Sir Rona created a stir by attempting to steal the race in a similar manner to Indignity last year, but failed to stay the journey. Wilson ran a poor race. Whisper Low led throughout in the Gibson Carmichael Stakes. His win completed a double, as her jockey, F. Bartie, and trainer, J. Jamieson, were associated with High Caste's win. Laureate and Vermont finished well in the minor places. Beauport weakened and gave a disappointing display. Mabson and Evergreen staged a stirring finish in the Farewell Handicap and the judge was unable to separate them. Mabson has been very consistent and has had two seconds and a dead heat in three starts here. Evergreen improved on Thursday’s form. Sun Valley was a fair third. Sir Rona had a 15-lengths' lead at one stage. Saul was second to last most of the trip, but moved up on the home turn. Apostrophe led two furlongs from the post but was unable to withstand the winner’s challenge. One length and a half; three. Time. 3.501. Gibson Carmichael Stakes, for two-year-olds, 7f: Whisper Low, 8.9 (E. Bartie) 1;. Laureate, 8.3 (H. Mornement) 2; Vermont, 7.6 (J. Purtell) 3. Thirteen starters. Three lengths; half.
