PIRINOA

SOCIAL GATHERING SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Memorial Hall was packed on Saturday evening, the occasion being the social gathering tendered by the residents of the district to local soldiers. Trooper O'Brien and Private Manihera were (he guests of honour. Private Jack Hansen, who was in Taihape, wrote regretting his inability to attend.

Mr F. Lovegrove in an appropriate speech, made a presentation to each soldier. The speaker also referred to the unavoidable absence of Private Hansen whom he stated was the last of four brothers Which would leave for overseas. Musical and vocal, items were given by a party of Maoris and greatly appreciated. Private Manihera briefly replied. The prizes at euchre were won by Mrs S. Cundy (ladies) and Mr R. McDonald (men). The dinner was won by Mr Tom Jennings Junr., while the chocolates went to Miss Judith Spicer and Mrs Seaward. The. dance music was supplied by a local band while Mr S. Mclntosh acted as M.C. Two Monte Carlo competitions were held, both of which were won by Mr Matakatea, who was partnered by Misses R. Enoka and J. Thompson respectively. Personal Items. Mrs S. Cundy, Featherston, is. the guest of Mrs J. H. Tilson. Te Kopi. Mr and Mrs J. Barr and Mrs Marshall were the guests of Mr and Mrs Peter Marshall, Waitapu, over the weekend. Mrs Davey is spending a holiday in the district. Mr and Mrs Trevor Hume have returned from a visit to Wanganui. Mr and Mrs J. P. O'Brien were the guests of Mr and Mrs J. O’Brien over the weekend. Mrs J. Carter and her nephew, Private A. Manihera, are visiting relatives in the Hawke’s Bay district. Miss T. Hemi, Tologa Bay, is staying with her aunt, Mrs R. Piripi. Mrs J. Bragg, who entered the Grey town Hospital recently for treatment, is showing a decided improvement in health. Mrs F. Bird and her infant son, who were in Napier where the child had been undergoing, special treatment, have returned home. Whooping Cough. Whooping cough is very prevalent among the young people in the district. Warm Weather. The weather has been exceedingly hot during the past week, Sunday being a particularly warm day. The seaside resorts were largely patronised over the weekend and good fishing with some large catches was experienced. School Picnic. The Pirinpa and Tuhitarata schools will hold a combined school picnic on Saturday.
