Sergt.-Major C. E. Rogers, of Masterton, who has been away for some months attending a training course, has resumed duty at the Masterton Defence Office. At the New Zealand centennial draughts congress at Christchurch yesterday. the following officers were appointed to the New Zealand Draughts Association:—Patron, Mr. E. M. Gibbard (Dannevirke); president. Mr G. Duncan iMosgiel); secretary and treasurer, Mr. E. Campbell; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. F. Hutchins, W. O’Malley. J. R. Clark; executive, Messrs. R. Weir. R. D. Russell, R. C. Murray, A. Bradfield.. R. Ednie, M. J. McKeem, W. Tibbles, M. Saltzman. At an informal function held at Wellington recently, Messrs. H. Valentine, second assistant general manager, and A. W. Wellsted, comercial manager, who are retiring on superannuation at the-end of this year, were farewelled by their fellow executive officers of the Railways Department. Mr. E. Casey, general manager of railways and others, spoke of the splendid record of service each of the guests had achieved and of the high regard in which both were held by all the staff. Cabled advice has been received of the death in California of Mr. Charles Henry Poole, former member of Parliament for Auckland West, Mr. Poole was born in Queen’s County, Ireland, in 1874, and went to Australia at the age of 11. He was educated in Melbourne and followed the sea till he had a leg broken. He then studied for the Wesleyan ministry, but later came to New Zealand. He was prominently associated with Y.M.C.A. work. He was elected for Auckland West in 1905 retained the seat till 1011 and was re-elected in 1914. He went to the United States of America as a lecturer and had resided there since.
