FAREWELL GATHERING

MR. AND MRS. SPACKMAN HONOURED.

Having disposed of his mail-contrac-tor’s business from Masterton to Glenburn, which he has successfully carried on over a period of 30 years, Mr. E. H. Spackman was entertained by the residents of Te Wharau and surrounding districts at a dance given in the hall on Saturday evening last, when there was a representative gathering of settlers. In making a presentation to Mr. and Mrs. Spackman of two easy chairs, Mr. F. Read referred to the splendid service giveh by Mr. Spackman to the district for a period of 30 years. Carrying the mail over partly formed muddy roads and fording bridgeless streams, was a severe task in the early days of mail carrying. The trip from town to Te Wharau and back occupied two days. With the advancing years Mr. Spackman had seen fit to retire, and Mr. Read hoped that the guests of the evening would spend many happy hours in comfort in the easy chairs which he had much pleasure in handing over to them as a gift from the people of Te Wharau and district, whom he had served for so ( long a period. In replying on behalf of Mrs. Spackman and himself. Mr. Spackman gave a brief outline of his business and the difficult stages it had gone through since he started in 1911. He thanked the residents for their support and also for the very useful gifts, which were great appreciated. Supper was served by a ladies’ committee. The duties of M.C. were ably carried out by Mr. F. C. Cotter.

Enjoyable Dance.

A very pleasant time was spent at Glenburn on Friday last the function being a dance organised by Mr. Ike Robins’ shearing gang and which- was held in the woolshed. The proceeds amounting to almost £9. were donated to the patriotic fund. The woolshed was beautifully decorated with streamers and greenery. The Maoris gave items during the evening which included action songs and dances and they had to respond to several recalls. Mr. Ike Robins acted as M.C. and he also gave some clever exhibitions of tricks with string. Visitors were present from all adjoining stations and the gathering terminated with the singing of “God Save the King.”
